GLEN COVE, N.Y. — Roland Auctions NY will present a two-part multiple estates auction on Friday and Saturday, May 20-21, at 10 am, featuring a selection of Chinese and Asian art, furniture and decorations, including many lots from the estate of Herbert and Florence Irving, collectors of all things Asian and founders of the Asian wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The two-part auction will focus largely on Asian art and decorative items, antiquities and contemporary art, including Dale Chihuly glass, Peking rugs and contemporary furnishings.
Along with many items from the extensive collection from the Irving estate, Roland is also offering a selection from the collection of Palm Beach socialite June Hirsch Jones, a former upper East side gallery owner who sold high-end postwar art, Chinese art and antiquities.
Highly anticipated items from the Irving estate will include a pair of Kang Hsi period Chinese porcelain famille decorated chargers with original invoice from Royal Phoenix ($6/9,000), a Chinese porcelain three-piece altar set attributed to the Kuang Hsi period, decorated with ping dragons seeking pearls on yellow ground ($4/6,000), a Chinese Ming vase, circa 1400, double gourd form bearing a 1960s Rare Arts label ($2/4,000) and a Chinese cinnabar lacquered bridal box, Qian Long period in peach shape, circa 1736-95.
Also taking the spotlight will be a Dale Chihuly 2003 hand-blown glass sculpture titled “Radiant Persian Pair,” Portland Press, signed by the artist ($5/7,000) and a Sam Francis untitled acrylic on paper, 1979, in shades of deep blue ($15/20,000). Francis (American, 1923-1994) occupies a prominent position in postwar American painting. Although associated with the Abstract Expressionist movement and Clement Greenberg’s Post-Painterly Abstraction, unlike many American painters of the time, he had direct and prolonged exposure to French painting and to Japanese art, which had an individual impact on his work.
Roland will offer a Volterrano Fifteenth Century Flemish fresco of Angel & Child ($6/8,000), along with a Joan Miro “Chemin de Ronde III” framed etching and aquatint, 1966, signed in pencil and numbered 13/50 ($3/5,000).
In other areas, an Edgar Brandt and George Bastard chrome plate vase from the SS Normandie, France, circa 1935, comes with original invoice from James Infante ($3/5,000). A Gorham sterling silver flatware set of 134 pieces is a complete set for 12 with nine pieces per place setting ($2,5/3,500) and an 18K yellow gold and white gold bracelet ($3/5,000) are further highlights.
Previews will be conducted on Thursday and Friday, May 19-20, 10 am to 6 pm.
