PROVINCETOWN, MASS. — James R. Bakker Antiques will conduct its spring live online fine arts auction on Saturday, May 21, starting at 1 pm. This auction features artworks from local estates and several prominent Provincetown and Cape Cod collectors. Leading the sale is an untitled Indian Space painting by Peter Busa ($15/20,000) and an important ship painting of The Francis painted in 1894 by Charles Sydney Raleigh ($10/15,000).
Masterworks from the Provincetown Art Colony offered to the highest bidders include “Codfish and Onions,” a watercolor still life by John Whorf ($5/7,000) and “Ryder Street Kite Shop,” a large oil by his daughter, Nancy Whorf ($5/7,000). Other highlights include Arthur Diehl’s 1927 oil of a Provincetown Wharf ($4/6,000) and Ross Moffett’s watercolor of Skarloff’s Wharf ($3/5,000). Works by Clifford Ashley, Frank Carson, Arthur Cohen, Nanno de Groot, John Hare, Gerrit Hondius, Karl Knaths, William Littlefield, Bruce McKain, Ray Nolin, Abraham Walkowitz and Sol Wilson will be offered as well as a selection of works by contemporary Provincetown painters, including Paul Bowen, John Clayton, Salvatore Del Deo and John Dowd. A selection of works by women artists associated with the Provincetown Art Colony include Daisy Hughes, Cynthia Packard and Ada Rayner. A large, impressive oil painting by Robert Gruppe, “Hauling the Catch ($2/3,000), is an example of just one of the works by artists beyond the shores of Cape Cod.
Several white-line color woodblock prints by Kathryn Lee Smith, including “Beneath Captain Jack’s Wharf” ($1/1,500) and other prints by William Evaul and Ruth Hogan are just a few of the print highlights.
