BEVERLY, MASS. — On Sunday, May 22, at 10 am, Kaminski Auctions has been commissioned to sell the partial contents of the estate of the late Dr James T. DeLuca of Forest Hill Gardens, N.Y., and items from several Palm Beach, Fla., estates. There are also items from the estate of Polly Byrne of Littleton, Mass.,, an avid collector and dealer of country furnishings, an extensive collection of Lalique from a Toronto, Canada, estate and a collection of Chinese porcelains.
Fine art in the sale includes a John Brewster Jr (American, 1766-1854), circa 1840-50 oil on canvas of Mary Coffin Lunt, second wife to Micajah Lunt of Newburyport, Mass., and a cousin of the artist. This portrait could possibly be the last portrait painted by Brewster and is signed by him on the top rear of the stretcher and is from a Rowley, Mass., collection.
A significant floral still life, oil on canvas, measuring 42 by 74 inches, framed, by N. Emerson, and two oval Jean Grenville paintings are from the Toronto estate. The two Grenville paintings are oils on board and titled “Les Patriots” and “La Maison des Americains,” with provenance from the Wally Findlay Galleries. There is also a watercolor on paper attributed to Ruth and Samuel Shute, circa 1802, also from the Rowley collection.
There is a pencil on paper by Harry Humphrey Moore (1844-1926). Moore is known for his Oriental figure genre views. This sketch is titled “Oriental Woman Smoking a Pipe” and is signed “H.H. Moore. From a Stow, Mass., collection comes a landscape of a winter scene with birch trees, an oil on canvas by Joy Biddle (1928-2007).
Jewelry highlights include a rare bicentennial pendant designed by Cartier, created in gold and platinum with 45 brilliant diamonds ($8/10,000). A 14K 20-inch gold emerald and diamond necklace is designed with three emeralds surrounded by diamonds from a Sherman Oaks, Calif., estate.
Kaminski Auctions’ Asian specialist has added more than 70 Asian and Chinese items to the sale. Top lots include a rare Chinese celadon Cong vase with a Qianlong mark on the base and a rare Chinese copper-red Dragon vase, possibly early Ming dynasty. Other pieces featured include a Chinese blue and red Dragon fishbowl, a Chinese blue and white vase from the Qing dynasty and a framed plaque depicting the Daoism Eight Immortals brightly decorated in bright enamels outlined with under-glaze cobalt blue and Qianlong mark on the base.
Glass collectors will be interested in an extensive collection of Rene Lalique items, including two ceiling fixtures, vases, ice buckets, bowls, plates in the frosted lily pad design, birds, decanters, glassware dresser items and perfume bottles. There are also many glass items from Val St Lambert, Daum and Baccarat on offer.
Furniture highlights include a Twentieth Century English black chinoiserie cabinet, an Italian Borghese mirror, a Nineteenth Century Biedermeier chest and a Chippendale tiger maple five-drawer dresser.
Polly Byrne from Littleton, Mass., had a love of early American antiques and spent years collecting. She was a well-known teacher and nurse who ran her business with her husband Tom and continued after his passing. Her collection includes a Frederick Wingate grandfather clock no. 180, from August, Maine, an early blue and white nine-drawer apothecary chest, a large blue-painted cupboard, a red-painted corner cupboard, early Shaker and rocking chairs, maple bedroom furniture and early baskets.
There is also a collection of ship models from a Medford estate, including a 24-gun sloop in a mahogany case, a three-masted sailing vessel, a French side-wheeler and a Gotaland coastal freighter, to name a few.
Silver highlights include a Towle Chippendale pattern sterling flatware service for eight in a mahogany case from Shreve, Crump & Low, and a Tiffany & Co. makers sterling oval bowl with a copper lid.
An eclectic addition to the auction is a vintage Italian pony cart, hand-painted with St George and the Dragon and inscribed “Hand Work, Cateno Privitera, Taormina, Made in Italy,” from a Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass., estate.
