FULTON, N.Y. — The Alan Drohan estate auction presented by Iroquois Auctions is one of the most important historical, unreserved auctions of the year in central New York, according to the auction house, and is set for June 11-12 at 10 am at 190 First Street. Bid onsite live, online at www.liveauctioneers.com or by phone or absentee.
Alan Drohan received his law degree in 1982 from Syracuse University College of Law. Prior to receiving his degree, he worked at Streeter & Van Sanford as a certified life underwriter. Throughout his law career he worked as the principal clerk for the New York state Supreme Court, Oswego, N.Y., having worked for Judges Donovan, Hurlbut, Nicholson and Seiter. In his spare time, he collected the best of the best antiques for himself all of his adult life.
Some of the highlights of his auction are an Abraham Lincoln registry document from 1847 from the Ward Hotel in Washington DC, where he stayed for the first night in the capital as a newly elected from Illinois congressmen with his two children and wife; the next night he went to his permanent residence. Along with Lincoln and family, there are more than 30 other signatures on this documented registry.
There is also an 18K highly engraved fountain pen inscribed into the gold “Hon. William Henry Seward” (US secretary of state). The family was told by the late Alan Drohan that this pen was used by Seward to sign the purchase of Alaska from the Russians. Also found were 139 Civil War letters from Granby Center (outside Fulton, N.Y.) pertaining to the war and with a drawing in one of a drummer boy, dog and log cabin. There were also more than 100 historical letters from the secretary to the Atlantic baseball league in Oneida, N.Y., discussing setting up baseball games in 1866, 50 World War II letters, and among the antiques found were more than 3,000 troy ounces of sterling silver, which contained many tea sets, flatware sets, bowls, vases, trophies, candlesticks and more
A rare painting by Charles Bartlett of the Taj Mahal will be on offer, plus an original large poster by James Montgomery Flagg, I Want You For US Army. Also selling in the unreserved auction will be a 1965 Triumph TR4 Sports Car (one owner, 49,000 miles), 1990 Mazda Miata (one owner, 39,000 miles) and a 1943 Farmall tractor in working condition.
Further highlights include five pieces of Tiffany glass and five Lalique glass figurines. There are more than 80 pieces of estate gold rings, bracelets, watches with diamonds and precious stones, a large, early book collection and large Fulton/Oswego County area historical collection.
Up for bid is a collection of more than 30 iron items, a Nineteenth Century fern sofa and two matching armchairs, other settees and many matching jardinières. A large Shaker box collection, more than 20 decorated stoneware pieces, more than 150 pieces of framed art, more than 100 pieces of antique refinished and unfinished furniture to include a rare 1700s Chippendale chest on chest, highly carved dolphin armed fainting couch, carved ball and claw chest, stack bookcases are more highlights. A large Chinese and Japanese collection of porcelain, more than 1,000 pieces of silverplate to include large trays, platters, silver flatware, tea sets, as well as a large collection of lighting will be sold to the highest bidder regardless of price.
