NEW YORK CITY — On June 5, Auctions at Showplace will present 280 lots of fine and decorative arts directly from estates of the New York City and the metropolitan area, including photography from Barry Frydlender and Sharon Ya’ari, collages by Enoc Perez and a sculpture by Allen Clark. Other highlights include Zsolnay art glass, a Patek Philippe watch, a pair of paintings by Jose Antonio da Silva, as well as furniture by Christian Liaigre, Herman Miller, Milo Baughman and Paul Evans. A wide array of silver, porcelain, glass, jewelry, paintings and more complete the sale.
Highlights include a vintage Patek Philippe 18K yellow gold square-face, dual-dial men’s wristwatch with an 18K Patek Philippe buckle and a black crocodile leather strap bracelet. The piece includes cream stick hour markers, a square dial with a secondary dial as well. It is marked Patek Philippe/Geneva and has mechanical movement. Next is a vintage Chopard 18K white gold diamond and opal-set lady’s dress watch featuring an oval opal dial with white gold feuille hands surrounded by round brilliant-cut and single-cut diamonds pave set in ellipse-form shaped case (approximately 2.40 carats). The sale includes a collection of jewelry to peruse.
Fine art is highlighted by a pair of photographs by Israeli photographer Barry Frydlender. The first offering is “The Raid,” a chromogenic contemporary color print photograph housed under glass within a frame. The piece has provenance from Andrea Meislin Gallery and exhibition history from the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. Next is Frydlender’s 2000 chromogenic contemporary color print photograph of people on the beach titled “Bombamela” and housed under glass in a white frame with provenance from Andrea Meislin Gallery and exhibition history from the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.
The sale continues with a 2001 Sharon Ya’ari (Israeli, b 1966) photograph of a beach landscape titled “Wet Blue Strip” with provenance from Sommer Contemporary Art and exhibition history from the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. Next is a Sharon Ya’ari gelatin silver print titled “Fundamental H” housed under glass in a black frame with provenance from Sommer Contemporary Art, Tel Aviv. Also of interest is a Gilbert Stuart (American, 1755-1828) attributed oil on canvas depicting a gentleman wearing a black double-breasted waistcoat, housed in a gilt wooden frame.
The sale includes a 3D photography collection by Margeaux Walter and works by Lucien Neuquelman, Joshua Reynolds, Samuel Halpert, Jose Antonio da Silva, Arthur Bowen Davies, Fernando Wamprechts, Charles Brady, Ted Tihansky and Henriette Herminie Gudin. Also of note are sculptures by Louis Mendez along with prints by Donald Baechler and Larry Zox.
Highlights continue with a 1920s carved and polychromed mahogany sculpture by American artist Allen Clark. The piece, titled “The Temptress of the King,” is signed in pencil to underside and was inspired by a Ninth to Thirteenth Century temple dancer figure from the archeological site at Angkor Wat, which Clark visited in 1925 and 1927 in his travels in Asia with the Fogg Museum at Harvard University. The piece has a label from Owings-Dewey Fine Art, Santa Fe, N.M.
Decorative arts highlights include a grouping of Hungarian Zsolnay art pottery. The sale includes two iridescent glazed works and two diminutive glazed ceramic works. Also of note is an Art Deco patinated bronze sculpture of a female dancer holding two white banded agate orbs in her outstretched hands by the French artist Max LeVerrier.
Furnishings on offer include a pair of northern Italian armchairs in ornamental carved and parcel-gilt and painted wood with upholstered backs and seats, circa 1800. The pair is followed by a pair of Italian Rococo Revival armchairs in painted and parcel-gilt wood with blue upholstery, Eighteenth Century, circa 1740. Furnishings continue with a collection of modern pieces, including an Eames for Herman Miller Midcentury Modern lounge chair and ottoman with black leather upholstery. Also on offer is a signed Paul Evans Brutalist modern wrought iron and glass coffee table with geometric patterns on base from 1968 and a Milo Baughman for Thayer Coggin Midcentury Modern burlwood veneer dining room sideboard console with a white marble top and two double-doors above chrome base. Finally, there is a Christian Liaigre (b 1945) “Sud” bench, designed 1994 and inspired by Diego Giacometti’s bronze work, with black patina bronze base and an upholstered seat.
Silver seekers will find a Tiffany & Co sterling silver flatware set for six plus extras and three serving pieces in the Linenfold pattern introduced in 1956 and designed by Oscar Riedener along with a collection of antique silver pieces.
