SARASOTA, FLA. — Andrew Ford has again pulled in some especially important and rare art for his Sarasota Estate Auction’s two-day sale, July 23-24. Headlining this 1,800-lot auction will be works by Twentieth Century American artists Albert York, Romare Howard Bearden and John Chamberlain. More than 30 pieces of art glass from several artists, including Dale Chihuly, Stephen Powell and Martin Blank, will be sold from the Ringling collection to benefit scholarships at the Ringling College of Art & Design in Sarasota.
Albert York (1928-2009), a favorite artist of Jackie Kennedy, Lauren Bacall and many other celebrities, completed “Trees and Fence,” originally titled “Imaginary Playground,” an oil on panel, 9 by 11 inches, which has just been released from a private collection in New England. For the rare occasion of one of his works coming onto the open market, this example of his work will be offered publicly for only the first time since he executed it about 1980. York was not a prolific painter completing only about 200-250 pieces in his lifetime, so on the infrequent occasion of one his pieces coming onto the open market there is expected to be a great deal of interest.
Romare Howard Bearden (1911-1988), Modernist African American figure and landscape collagist, completed “Quilting” as a mixed media watercolor image of two African Americans quilting. Purchased directly from the artist in 1981, the work offered in this sale includes documentation.
John Anguis Chamberlain (1927-2011) was known for his crushed automobile sculptures and collages, with his work displayed in many important institutions worldwide. This auction includes a work dated to 1984 made from salvaged car parts, mounted on paper.
Day one will include Modern design and a one-owner unreserved jewelry collection featuring more than 100 pieces from a single estate.
Prospective bidders should contact Sarasota Estate Auction directly for in-house bidding or bid online with Liveauctioneers, Invaluable, Bidsquare or Auction Mobility online. There will also be phone bidding and a limited live audience. The gallery is open daily except Sunday for previews, along with Sarasota Trading Company, 522 South Pineapple. Due to the location Ford has created an in-house shipping operation for both sending purchases and picking up consignments. For information 941-359-8700 or www.sarasotaestateauction.com.
