PLAINVILLE, CONN. — The majority of the August 1 sale at Winter Associates comes from two Connecticut estates. The New Haven home belonged to a dedicated collector with an impressive assortment of quilts assembled over decades; they will be offered in Winter Associates’ next few auctions. The group being introduced in this sale comprises 16 quilts, with most dating from the early to mid-Nineteenth Century.
One particularly interesting piece is a red and white work with a hand-drawn church in the center block inscribed “N.E. Church, Hyde Park, Mass., dedicated November 9th, 1874,” and it is further inscribed with more than 1,200 signatures assumed to be those of the parishioners. Such quilts, also known as album quilts, were often given as gifts to an individual in the community who was moving away. There are many other fine pieced and applique examples with early prints, dyes and designs, etc.
Also from this estate are a variety of Nineteenth Century boxes, many with intricate inlay and fine finishes. An early Nineteenth Century English Regency tabletop cabinet has a gothic arch peaked case with original paint, and it is further decorated with penwork of landscape scenes, oak leaves and other floral and vine motifs, pagodas, etc., inscribed “Melbrook/ [S. S.] / 1822” and “Pagodas at Mahabalipuram.” Chinoiserie and neoclassical motifs often appear in penwork, a skill done by ladies at home as well as by professional artists and was popular in England and Scotland from about 1780 to 1850. This cabinet measures 19 by 14½ by 7 inches and the collector’s handwritten note stated that it was purchased from a Boston dealer.
From the Canton estate, a home of more than 6,000 square feet, comes a number of American case pieces, including an Eighteenth Century chest on chest made in Connecticut, two oxbow chests displayed as a close pair in the entry hall of this home, but that on close inspection reveal the slightly smaller one was made in Massachusetts, circa 1775, and the larger, with a distinct “quadrant” foot, was made in Connecticut, circa 1780. Also from this estate are two tall clocks, one signed “M. Myles-Paisley” on dial with an unusual case, the other an unsigned late Eighteenth Century American piece. This collector also loved metalware, and an interesting assortment of brass and copper will be in the sale, including early candlesticks, tobacco boxes, etc.
A variety of other Americana, including scrimshaw, weathervanes, portraits, landscapes, as well as Oriental rugs from the large Canton home, silver and jewelry will be featured.
This sale will be live at the Plainville gallery starting at 5:30 pm on August 1. Winter Associates’ auction catalog is available online as of Friday, July 22.
