PROVINCETOWN, MASS. — James R. Bakker Antiques will conduct its annual summer live online fine arts auction on Saturday, August 6, starting at 1 pm. “Bathers,” an oil painted by Lucy L’Engle in 1923 ($30/40,000) and “Commercial Street Evening” by Nancy Whorf ($5/7,000), one of four works from a local private collection leads a strong selection of women artists in this sale. Paintings and watercolors by other women artists include Evelin Bourne, Polly Burnell, Anne Bosworth Greene, Nancy Maybin Ferguson, Hilda Neily, Cynthia Packard, Agnes Weinrich and Carol Westcott.
Other masterworks from the Provincetown Art Colony offered to the highest bidders includes “Unloading the Catch” by John Whorf ($5/7,000) and “Rowing Boat” by Ross Moffett ($2/3,000). A selection of works by Joseph Alexander, Gerrit Beneker, Arthur Cohen, Arthur Diehl, Henry Hensche, Philip Malicoat, Bruce McKain, Haynes Ownby, Romanos Rizk, Paul Rohland and George Swanson will be offered, as will contemporary paintings and drawings by Mark Beard, Jim Broussard, Michael Davis, John Dowd, Steve Kennedy, Frank Milby and Steve Walker, among others.
“On the Mooring” by Tod Lindenmuth ($1/1,500), one of three color linocut prints by the artist, and other white-line woodblock prints by Sally Brophy, William Evaul, Ruth Hogan and Kathryn Lee Smith should generate interest among print collectors. A monotype by Blanche Lazzell and an assortment of etchings and woodblocks by Gifford Beal, William Bicknell, Albert Edel, George Grosz, Paul Resika and Donald Witherstine round out the sale with something for everyone.
