The pace of life slows with the arrival of August, and it is the perfect time to pick up a book whether it be an old friend or a new acquaintance waiting to capture your attention. Here at Connecticut River Book Auction, we’ve assembled a sale with something to please almost everyone.
For those with an interest in the past, we have from the 1920’s Volumes 11 and 12 of The Quill A Magazine of Greenwich Village. For those interested in the Civil War, we offer from the Press of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle Paul Philippoteaux’s Cyclorama of the Battle of Gettysburg. This softcover is bound into a volume with Farrington’s 1881 description of the construction of the East River (Brooklyn) Bridge and the Western Maryland’s Railroad’s Gettysburg in War and Peace. All maps and diagrams appear to be present.
Do you like children’s books? If the answer is yes and you have a soft spot in your heart for Oz then we have the following to please: 1913’s The Patchwork Girl of Oz, 1915’s The Scarecrow of Oz, 1918’s The Woodman of Oz, 1919’s The Magic of Oz, 1920’s Glinda of Oz. All appear to be first issues. Oh, to cap it off we also have a 1900 copy of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz – a 1st edition possibly 1st issue missing one colored plate and, in the past, poorly rebound. Add to that a 1933 Pop-Up Mikey Mouse book and more than a dozen other children’s lots and we promise your bedtime story telling will be filled with wonderous dreams.
For those with an interest in photography, art and architecture we have more than a score of lots to satisfy those artistic interests including: Landscape (1996) by Shibata, The Eastern Shore (1976) by Szabo, Bernard Maybeck Architect of Elegance (2011) by Wilson and The Arts of Honami Koetsu Japanese Renaissance Master (2000) by Fischer.
Many of the lots in this auction came from two consignors with a special interest in signed volumes. Some of the volumes in this auction were signed by N. C. Wyeth, Lou Piniella, Cal Ripken, Mia Farrow, Jackie Mason, Kate Hudson, Bo Jackson, Larry McMurty, Joseph Califano, Anne Rice, Sam Snead, and Bill Clinton.
Every auction has at least one unique offering. This month we provide for your consideration several lots of ephemera from the estate of noted marine artist James A. Mitchell. Jim lived in an old fisherman’s shack in Noank, Connecticut and spent nearly half a century painting and drawing his surroundings. Of special interest is a box containing the story and drawings for a children’s book based on his beloved dog “Hugo.” Whether this story was ever published, we do not know but his sketches and fragments of the story are a delight to behold. As you might imagine, Jim was an avid sailor who was once shipwrecked off the Bahamas. Perhaps, to commemorate that event he hung a colorful 1932 map of the Bermuda Islands by Shurtleff on his walls. This map can be yours come Friday, August the fifth.
