In Person Preview: August 10th & 11th (10am-4pm)
POTSDAM, N.Y. — Blanchard’s Auction Service will present its annual Adirondack auction on Friday, August 12, at 11 am. While it’s an online auction, there will be an in-person preview at Blanchard’s auction hall, August 10-11, from 10 am to 4 pm.
Highlights will include Adirondack and camp furnishings; oil paintings and fine art; guide boats, canoes and nautical items; Old Hickory and rustic furniture; bronzes; Stickley and Mission furniture; Arts and Crafts accessories; Twentieth Century lamps and lighting and more.
A marquee lot is a rare 1854 Batavia, Genesee Co., N.Y., July 4th broadside printed on three pieces of paper and measuring 70 by 36 inches. Also, a relief-cut Bald Eagle measuring 9 by 17 inches, professionally conserved and framed behind lightweight plexiglass will be featured.
The broadside prominently headlines an oration by Sen. William Henry Seward (1801-1872), who was just then beginning to jockey for an 1856 presidential nomination. After the Republican party was formed, and Seward and Thurlow Weed joined it, Weed would convince Seward to wait until 1860. Also prominently featured was a balloon ascent by the aeronaut John Wise (1808-1879), culinary delights, fireworks and music. Seward, of course, would later become secretary of state, survive an assassination attempt the night Lincoln was shot and acquire Alaska from Russia. Experts consider Wise “the most experienced and distinguished aeronaut of his day, perhaps the greatest American balloonist of all time.”
Blanchard’s auction hall is at 1891 Morley-Potsdam Road. For more information, 315-265-5070 or www.blanchardsauctionservice.com.
