BEVERLY, MASS. — Kaminski’s estate auction on Saturday and Sunday, August 20-21, features the contents of a prestigious Boston Commonwealth Avenue estate, along with numerous estates from Manchester-By-The-Sea, Beverly, Salem, Boston, Palm Beach and southern California. Starting time for this auction is 11 am Eastern time.
A large selection of Asian porcelains is on offer, including a highly valued Chinese purple glazed bowl, an important Chinese famille rose flowerpot, several Chinese dragon vases and a pair of Chinese celadon-glazed Zong vases. Other Chinese lots include a Nineteenth Century Chinese lacquer table having scenic design throughout, purported to be from the Summer Palace, a pair of Eighteenth Century Chinese carved stone foo dogs standing 28 inches high and Chinese huanghuali furniture. A Vietnamese entry is a set of six 24K Kim-Thanh gold leaf bars, mounted and framed under glass. Each foil is approximately 1.0 troy ounce.
A pair of late Eighteenth Century Dutch bombe chests with extensive inlay leads the way in the European furniture category. Also featured is a French Neoclassical-style circular table with a marble top labeled Trouvailles and a Nineteenth Century English Regency center table having brass inlay.
American furniture highlights include an Eighteenth Century American Pennsylvania walnut tall chest having graduated drawers, labeled on the back from the Knox Family of Philadelphia, and a Seventeenth/Eighteenth Century English William and Mary chest on stand, all original, and an early New England tiger maple drop-leaf table.
Ephemera collectors will take note of two collections of Aldro Hibbard (1886-1972) items. The first is a collection of his sketchbooks from the 1890s to 1914, including his trip to Europe, mostly pencil and a few watercolors, and the second is a collection of 14 Aldro T. Hibbard’s watercolors, pastels and charcoal with a copy of A.T. Hibbard, Artist in Two Worlds, signed. Also of interest in the ephemera category are two collections, the first of the artist Paul Cadmus and an Ethel Waters collection that belonged to her good friend and music collaborator Eddie Stuart.
Fine art in the auction features several American and English portraits, including one of Louis XV by Hyacinthe Rigaud (1659-1743) in a gilt frame, a Nineteenth Century French portrait of a regal woman, oil on canvas, and several early American Nineteenth and Twentieth Century portraits. There are several marine paintings by the American artist Walter Lofthouse Dean (1854-1912), a fall scene by Charles Stepule (American, 1911-2006), a painting by Helen Van Wyk (American, 1930-1994) and another by Marshall Johnson Jr (1850-1921), titled “Rowing Out.” A contemporary multicolor abstract by Ed Sobio also features in the sale.
European art begins with a signed Venetian canal scene with gondolas, oil on canvas by Tiverdi, a Musee National Message Biblique poster by Marc Chagall (1887-1985), dated 1974, and several Erté serigraphs on paper, numbered and signed.
A commemorative photograph titled the “Five Presidents Extravaganza,” signed by Presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronal Reagan and George H.W. Bush, with the presidential seal, is valued at $2/4,000.
Miscellaneous items of interest include a rare antique bamboo armchair by Philip Collect of London/New York, an Aerin Bonnington crystal chandelier and an Italian marble sculpture, signed on the back “A. Batacchi Florence.”
As always, there is a selection of antique rugs, including two rare Indo-Heriz rugs, an antique Turkoman Tekke and a Persian Caucasian geometric rug.
Militaria features a lot that includes a B-17 pilot’s leather bomber jacket, flight bags, sleeping cot and welcome home banner, as well as an Eagle Scouts 1930s uniform, all from a Beverly estate.
