PLAINVILLE, CONN. — From estates and private homes in Mystic, Guilford, Canton and New Haven, Conn., a wide variety of Americana and other items will be auctioned by Winter Associates on August 29 starting at 5:30 pm. The sale includes part two of a substantial quilt collection, five weathervanes, paintings, ephemera, books, stamps, silver, art glass, Asian and patio furnishings, as well as Oriental carpets.
The Guilford home contributes two of the weathervanes to this sale, a copper gamecock with patina and the iconic “Black Hawk” running horse design based upon an actual famous Morgan driving horse (1833-1856) who was known for his long driving range and sired more than 1,772 foals. His image was reproduced in a series of lithographs in the Nineteenth Century.
Also from this home with a taste for early American furnishings is an oil on canvas naïve landscape featuring Native American Indians, as well as a series of Nineteenth Century oils in ornate gilded frames by Henry H. Parker, George F. Higgins, Robert Gallon, Olaf Langer and others. Their antiques blended nicely with D.R. Dimes figured maple chairs and table, as well as reproduction.
From an impressive home and part of an ongoing offering of quilts from a New Haven estate is an album quilt circa 1840. More than 20 quilts from this estate will cross the block; the first selection from this estate was offered on August 1. The album quilt has unusually long inscriptions on the front and a label with a family record inscribed in ink on the reverse stating one of the blocks was provided by the maker’s grandmother, Anne Atkinson, born before the Revolutionary War in 1756 and died in 1842, a year after the quilt was finished. Early carved, painted and some Chinese lacquered boxes, including sewing boxes, lap desks, etc., are from another collection from this estate. Discovered in their voluminous library was an Eighteenth Century book of nine bound pamphlets by John Adams and Alexander Hamilton, as well as a signed first edition by T. S. Eliot and first editions by Ezra Pound and others.
Eighteenth Century American furniture, including many pieces from Pennsylvania have been sent to auction from an estate in Canton that had a 6,000-plus-square-foot home. It includes a Pennsylvania secretary, circa 1780, and a Pennsylvania hutch, circa 1790, as well as a Philadelphia tall clock, probably done by John Wood Jr, circa 1785. These pieces are in addition to an early slant lid desk, blanket chest and chest of drawers, as well as a Sheraton two-part dining table. The estate is also offering a large number of hand-woven Oriental rugs, many purchased from the well-known Hartford area rug retailer J. Namnoun.
From the estate in Mystic comes roundabout or corner chair from Norwich, Conn., circa 1760, which was illustrated and discussed in the Connecticut Historical Society Bulletin, vol. 50, no. 4, in the fall 1985 and exhibited. The home also held a number of artworks including an 1894 ship portrait by Antonio Jacobsen and a landscape of bonfire in the forest by William Keith, who is known for his nighttime compositions. Also of note are three weathervanes, an unusual copper stag, copper running horse and a horse with sulky.
A thorough US stamp collection from 1847 to 2021 in five Scott Official National albums (green), which appears to be a lifelong, single-owner collection, includes a Columbian Exposition Issue 1893 (#230 – 245), which was the first commemorative grouping to have been issued in $1, $2, $3, $4 and $5. While the $1 and $2 were widely used by the public, and $5 used often for larger shipping, the $3 and $4 were much less common, and are, therefore, widely sought-after today. This stamp will be a part of one of the four large lots to be offered.
Previews are Friday, August 26, from noon to 4 pm; Sunday, August 28, from 2 to 4 pm; and on Monday, August 29, from noon to 5 pm.
