NEW YORK CITY — Auctions at Showplace will present an estate auction on September 11. The auction brings together 280 lots of fine art, decorative arts, furnishings, jewelry and luxury goods.
Highlights open with a hand fabricated Art Deco platinum and diamond engagement ring, featuring a rare old European cut diamond, weighing 1.76 carats I color and VVS2 clarity, centered and prong set, the ring shoulders adorned with four flush-set baguette diamonds. Next is a large Buccellati silver dinner service in the Palm Beach pattern (designed 1970) for 12, 175 pieces, marked .800 and with the full hallmarks of Fabbrica Argenteria Clementi dì Giovanni Mantel & C. S.p.A. Also featured is a Jennifer Lee (Scottish, b 1956) modern studio art pottery ceramic bowl.
Fine art highlights open with a Louis Gasne (French, 1858-1960) Belle Epoque period parcel-gilt cast iron statue of a crowned peace allegory in a classical drapé mouillé dress, holding up an electrified torch of liberty, mounted on wooden pedestal. Gasne operated a foundry from 1874 to 1896 and won the Medaille d’Or at the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris. There are two oil on canvas works signed Philips Wouwerman (Dutch, 1619-1668). One depicts two grooms caring for horses in a stable, and the other depicts warriors mounted on horses battling with swords. Next is a modern oil on canvas by Alexandra Pacula (Polish/American, b 1979) titled “Nocturnal Spirits.” Also featured is a Nathan Isaevich Altman (Ukrainian/Russian, 1889-1970) oil on canvas painting depicting a still life with a bouquet with chrysanthemums and lilies in a pitcher atop a table. Also of note is an impressionistic oil on board by Emile Albert Gruppe (American, 1896-1978) depicting a village landscape with a river and church with a steeple rising above trees. The sale includes works by Daniele Donde, Carlo de Tommasi, Bernard Buffet and Erte.
Sculpture by Victor Salmones, Masatoyo Kishi “Kuki,” Edmund Thomas Quinn and Lorrie Goulet is also included.
Silver seekers will find a Watson sterling silver dinner service in the George II Rex – hand-chased pattern designed in 1936. A massive Italian baroque revival .800 silver tray with a “531 MI” mark for an unknown Milanese maker active between 1955 and 1971, of shaped oblong form with lobed corners with scrolling acanthus and shell decoration, the handles with scrolling acanthus, grotesque masques and dolphins, plus Also a Towle sterling Mary Chilton pattern service for six and a Birks sterling silver service for eight in the Louis XV pattern are also featured.
Furnishings on offer include a Regency mahogany bookcase secretary cabinet with crown molding above two “gothick” mullioned glazed cabinet doors opening to reveal two shelves, the upper section above a rectangular base with a false drawer front concealing a desk and writing surface above two cabinet doors opening to reveal a fitted interior, on gadrooned turned feet. Next is a Directoire brass-mounted mahogany three-drawer commode with shaped gris de Sainte-Anne marble tops above three paneled drawers flanked by reeded colonnettes on toupie feet.
For those with more modern tastes, September 11 includes a Gilbert Rohde (American, 1894-1944) for Herman Miller Art Deco extending dining table, designed in the 1930s as Model 3725 from the Formal Dining Group. Also offered will be a set of six Saporiti Italia modern or postmodern “Yonkers” upholstered barrel chairs in a jungle brocade; a Vladimir Kagan “Omnibus” modern corner sofa with Lucite legs, upholstered with an abstract geometric pattern fabric in gilt and beige; the matching modern Vladimir Kagan (American, 1927-2016) modern floating ottoman. Next are two lots of Milo Baughman (American, 1923-2003): Midcentury Modern three-seater upholstered sofas covered with Jack Lenor Larsen cotton velvet. Also of note are a pair of Bruno Mathsson for Karl Mathsson, “Eva” Chairs (designed 1977) with serpentine bentwood frame with neutral canvas webbing and a suite of Charles and Ray Eames Modernica ESU office furniture.
Lighting includes a pair of Paolo Moschino Italian modern brass adjustable floor lamps, with cream and brass shades, made in Italy, fitted with an American plug.
Entertainers will exalt at a 58-piece Lynn Chase part porcelain dinner service for 12 in the Jaguar Jungle pattern.
Decorative arts highlights include a Lucie Rie (Austrian, 1902-1995) attributed modern ceramic studio art pottery bowl, glazed in a blue-green color; a Carl Hubert Wyland (German, 1886-1972) Art Deco period casket coffer in patinated wrought iron with wood lining, maker’s monogram on the bottom, circa 1925; and an Ernst Wahliss Austrian Art Nouveau Jugendstil “Holly” pottery vase with decorative band of holly and “jewels” in relief, on a raised gilt spider web over a gilt ground. The section concludes with an Emile Diffloth (French, 1856-1933) for Boch Freres Art Nouveau amphora-shaped vase with three handles and partial iridescent glaze, marked on bottom with makers mark and monogram of Diffloth.
Jewelry includes a trove of estate jewelry. Luxury lovers will find a collection of vintage handbags by Judith Leiber and Louis Vuitton.
