ASTORIA, N.Y. — On September 18, Auctions at Showplace will premiere the third Showplace Backstage, Astoria NY auction. These auctions are conducted from Showplace’s new warehouse facility in Astoria.
Showplace Backstage sales are a destination for those seeking “accessible luxury,” said owner Amos Balaish.
Fine art highlights waiting in the wings at Showplace include a 1980s oil on wood by English artist Peter Heard depicting a lady walking and an abstract gouache on paper depicting barges reflecting on the sea by the Swiss artist Denoel. Large abstract paintings on canvas, include a 2003 piece depicting an abstract composition with two doves by American painter Stephen Kaye and an 1968 abstract oil on canvas by Jorge Vargas depicting free forms in blue.
Also of note is a German folk art scene by Henry Dieckman and a 1980s floral still life on paper by Tom Dooley. The sale also includes paintings by Nicholas Takis and Antonio De Vity.
Prints and multiples include works by Charley Harper, Luigi Rossini, Lowell Nesbitt, Chaim Gross and David Shapiro.
Sculpture highlights include a 1980s abstract brass seagull bird sculpture on a natural stone base by Curtis Jere, an abstract patinated bronze sculpture depicting a woman merging with a saxophone by Jorge Coste and a bent walnut wood sculpture of an abstracted crane bird with brass eyes, mounted on a black granite stone base by Eric Tardif.
Furniture on offer appeals to tastes ranging from Victorian to Renaissance Revival and Art Deco to Midcentury Modern. Midcentury offerings include a Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller RAR rocking chair in orange fiberglass and a modern Harry Bertoia (American, 1915-1978) upholstered diamond chair for Knoll. Next is a 1960s Danish modern teak two-door cabinet and a Soborg Mobler Danish mid-century modern teak open bookcase with three adjustable shelves. Modern highlights conclude with a Mies van der Rohe Barcelona chrome and glass coffee table, a Barovier & Toso vintage brass and Murano glass wall sconce and a Modernist industrial-style black floor lamp in the style of Serge Mouille.
Traditional offerings include a pair of Hollywood Regency Art Deco-style parcel-gilded ebonized and gilt wood “Elise” nightstands by Henredon and a queen-size Stickley wood bed stand with a slotted headboard. A pair of American Empire ebonized and paint-decorated side chairs with rush seats continue the collection. A Chinese black lacquered wooden cabinet with two doors, brass pulls and hardstone inlay decoration of flowers and birds along with a Maria Yee modern wooden side table are on offer along with a Trollope & Colls London hexagonal oak games table and a French Consulat-style arm chair with rectangular mahogany crest rail and downswept arms ending in gold-painted dolphin terminals upholstered in leopard jacquard.
Backstage at Showplace is full of glitz and glamor. The sale includes a collection of fine and costume jewelry. Of note is a vintage Stephen Dweck gilded silver vermeil dome diamond ring composed of approximately 93 single-cut round diamonds. Also on offer is a collection of luxury handbags from Miu Miu, Tod’s, Prada and Bottega Veneta along with scarves by Hermes
Decorative objects from around the globe will also be offered. Decorative arts highlights include a suite of four Royal Vienna and other porcelain decorative plates, depicting the busts of several young women, as well as an allegorical scene of goddesses. A vintage tabletop model/sculpture of a cannon with an articulated barrel continues the sale. Next is a Shoji Hamada Japanese Mingei Kakiyu Midcentury Modern bottle-shape vase with a rich kaki glaze and a Japanese Midcentury Modern ribbed metal ikebana vase with green patina. Next is a Roseville Rozane Ware Egypto Arts and Crafts speckled matte green glazed diminutive ewer, circa 1905 and an Arts and Crafts Van Briggle ceramic pottery candlestick holder with a gradient Ming blue glaze. Also of note is an Eales 1779 Italian silverplate three-part bun warmer with gilt interior and standing on three pad feet, a collection of Japanese mixed metal iron tsubas and a Murano handmade aquamarine glass vase by Cenedese vetri.
A vintage “C.G. Conn” brass saxophone measuring 24 inches long by 4¾-inch diameter at the end of the bell and a “Redler Hooster Elkhart Indiana” clarinet measuring 21 inches long by 3-inch diameter at the end of the bell, both housed in a brown case marked “Arnold Brilhart” are up for bid.
