OTEGO, N.Y. — The Oneonta, N.Y., estate of Mildred Helen Parish will be settled at her request at an unreserved public auction to be presented by Milly’s long-time friend, retired auctioneer Buzz Hesse. The auction will be conducted Saturday, October 8, at the Hesse property at 370 Main Street, Otego, in conjunction with Ed Schillaci and Jack Shultis of Two Feathers Auctions. This will be an old-fashioned, traditional auction with in-person or absentee bidding only.
Milly Parish (1929-2022), a lifelong resident of Oneonta, was a highly regarded schoolteacher and active community member. She had many interests, most notably education, antiques and history, especially local and New York state history. Milly enjoyed “collecting,” going antiquing, and attending auctions, as well as reading, studying and traveling. Her heirloom antiques and special personal collections will be featured in the auction.
Milly’s prized collection of Georg Jensen silver jewelry will highlight the auction along with her many pieces of blue decorated stoneware — among which are numerous Whites Utica items. She collected many art pottery pieces by various known makers, including Hampshire, Saturday Evening Girls, Marblehead, Rookwood, Van Briggle, etc.
Handcrafted textiles are another of Milly’s favored collections. There is a Delhi coverlet dated 1850 as well as quilts and many needlepoint and hooked pictorial pieces. Oriental carpets, baskets, cast iron figurals and doorstops, paintings, toys, dolls, woodenware, bottles, oil lamps and more created a cozy atmosphere in the Parish family farmhouse among the late Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century furniture that graced the home.
All 400-plus lots will be posted with photos on www.auctionzip.com at Auctioneer #36033. The sale will be under a tent; some chairs will be set out, but bidders can bring their own. Look for “Auction Parking” signs along Main Street. Bring your own packing materials.
The auction starts at 10 am. Previews are on Friday, October 7, from noon to 5 pm, and on Saturday, October 8, from 8 to 9:45 am. For information, 607-287-5320 or email buzzh123@gmail.com.
