CLINTONDALE, N.Y. — Kensington Estate Auctions’ Monday, October 10, online auction will include a diverse collection from the Seventeenth to the Twenty-First Centuries of antiques, ancient coins, manuscripts, historic British documents, sterling silver, antique swords, Seventeenth-Eighteenth Century etchings, an Eighteenth Century retablo, American drawings, pulp art magazine paintings, surreal drawings, icons, illuminated manuscripts, photography, modern and urban art, Inuit and American Indian artifacts, Haitian and Tinga Tinga paintings, carved sculptures, opera sets and costume designs, antique cartes de visite and other items.
Coin collectors will be interested in the Dutch gold ducat coin from the shipwreck of the De Liefde, 1711; two Pope Pius IX gold coins; Islamic dynasty: Umayyad gold dinar coin, 712-713 CE; Greek Larissa Thessaly silver coin 420-395 BCE; Domitian silver denarius, 92-93 CE; 1914 King George V Canadian $10 gold coin; and a hoard of ancient Roman coins uncovered in England.
The Volkmar Kurt Wentzel “Washington By Night” highlights the multitude of photography offerings. Included in this signed, limited-edition portfolio are 11 images of Washington DC.
Art from New York City is highlighted by a painting from the “Shadowman” Richard Hambleton. Imagery of New York is supported by Frederick Mershimer’s mezzotints; Far Gallery (1934-1972) surrealist drawings from the 1950s; New York City Opera original costume and stage designs by Lloyd Evans and Beni Montresor; Central Park painting by John Legrand; New York City graffiti-scene represented by LA II (Angel Ortiz), just to name a few.
The opportunity to view history is available through the miniature painted portraits of the imperial house of Romanov (1613-1917). In addition are historic handwritten manuscripts on vellum with armorial wax seals of the British Empire from King George V and King George VI, among others.
Other British offerings include Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh signed family-photo holiday cards; 1860s album of British arms, crests and monograms; drawings of Winston Churchill and autographed menu card signed by leading British artists and authors such as Edmund Dulac, Walter Fowler, Rene Bull and others. British currency is reflected in the gold quarter sovereign commemorative proof coin of Sir Winston Churchill and Queen Elizabeth II; Queen Victoria enameled silver two schilling pendant; and 1689 William and Marry silver three pence coin.
Representing world religions are an Eighteenth Century Spanish Colonial retablo: Virgin of Guadalupe with vignettes of Juan Diego and the miracle of Tepeyac; Hindu palm-leaf manuscripts of Brahmanic discourses; Nineteenth Century Ethiopian goatskin manuscript of magic spells and prayers; Koran manuscript leaves; and an antique bible stand with champleve rosettes of saints and lamb. Offered will be a Nineteenth Century Devanagari handwritten illustrated manuscript of Lord Krishna and Rhada among Gopas with ten miniature paintings.
An antiquarian book collection includes the Codex Medicamentarius, Paris, 1758 and The Irish Member, with wood-engraved plates by John Millais, 1868.
Included in Seventeenth Century European etchings are works by Adriaen Janz Van Ostade, Jacques Francois Saly and others.
The highlights of original illustration paintings include Robert Doares’ pulp magazine adventure art for Argosy, Blue Book and Outdoor Life, circa 1950s. In addition are illustrations by Davis Meltzer for NASA; Daniel Horne fantasy painting and cover-art lithographs by Raoul Dufy, Henri Matisse, Edouard Pignon for Paul Arma, Paris, 1953.
The category of objets d’art includes Ferdinand Barbedienne bronze champleve enamel vases; Eighteenth Century carved tobacco snuff box; Walter Von Nessen dinner bell; Nineteenth Century Victorian brass dinner gong; assorted sterling silver service ware; pair of filigree sterling silver candlesticks; Victorian napkin rings and several writing desk sets.
The modern, fantasy and surreal category includes Exquisite Corpse drawings by Leonore Fini, Stanislao Lepri and Konstanty Jelenski and other unique artists of the 1950s. Other highlights include Serge Clement’s “Folies Bergere”; Nancy Depew’s “Nude”; Ken MacDonald’s “The Red Curtain”; John Rosmini; Ben Kasazkow; Robert Kipness; Paul Jacoulet; Claude Simard; Abraham Walkowitz, among others.
Known for ethnographic art, the auction house will sell Tinga Tinga paintings by Salum Mussa; Vodou Damballa painting by Louis Joseph; Burmese erotic painted hand scroll; carved wood panel of Balinese mythological deities; Northwest Coast Sea Eagle by Barry Herem; Inuit Eskimo artifacts; Apache carved totems; Tibetan hand-knotted rug; Japanese triptych by Utagawa Kunisada and more.
