ASTORIA, N.Y. — Auctions at Showplace will present Showplace Backstage, Astoria on Sunday, October 16. The sale includes 460 lots of fine and decorative art, including Midcentury Modern furniture, designer handbags, paintings, prints and posters. Porcelain, glass, lighting and jewelry complete the sale. Showplace Backstage sales are a destination for affordable luxury. Clients are also welcome to celebrate Showplace’s second location by attending a preview party at the Backstage location (36-01 35th Street. Astoria, NY 11106) on Saturday, October 15, from 12:30-4:30 pm.
Fine art highlights open with a modern mixed media by the French painter Pierre Bosco housed under glass in a Heydenryk frame and a modern Pop oil on canvas painting of a figure with short black hair and a colorful blouse by American painter Ryan O’Laughlin. Next is a portrait of a woman on canvas by American painter Emily Earle Lindsley and a watercolor of a blue bull by Charles Burdick. The sale continues with landscapes by German painter Carl Blum and American painter Rex Wakefield. Also of note are works by Zwy Milshtein, M.E. Wien, Sue Ehrlich and Yovan Radenkovitch.
Prints on offer include a Japanese woodblock landscape by Kiyoshi Saito and a color woodcut landscape depicting Japanese traditional houses by American artist Clifton Karhu. A 1976 mezzotint of the iconic New York City Empire Diner by John Baeder continues the sale along with an Inuit print of fighting ravens by Isah Papialuk (Paperk) (Inuit, b 1926) and Lydia Quasiak (Inuit, b 1934). Also of note is a black and white photograph titled “In Memory of My Parents” by Ukranian photographer Arkady Lvov (Ukranian, b 1955) and a limited edition poster of “Mulholland Drive: the road to the studio” by David Hockney and published by Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
Sculpture highlights include a Cubist figural work by Morgan Bulkeley and a nephrite sculpture of a polar bear by Lyle Sopel. Next is a patinated composite sculpture after Vincenzo de’ Rossi’s “Hercules & Diomedes” depicting a scene from “The Labors of Hercules.”
It is followed by a painted stone sculpture of a musician by Elena Basilevsky and a patinated bronze horse sculpture by Frederick Weinburg.
The sale includes a Niels Otto Moller for Gudme Mobelfabrik Danish Midcentury Modern mahogany surfboard dining table and a Harvey Probber travertine round coffee table with an openwork wood base. Next is a set of four Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen Scandinavian dining chairs and a set of two Shin & Tomoko Azumi for LaPalma set of two bar stools. The sale continues with a linen-upholstered Jean Michel Frank style X-form stool with patinated bronze nail-head trim and a pair of Marcel Breuer Cesca chairs with caned backs and seats. Modern lighting highlights include an Emil Stejnar flush ceiling pendant with a brass form hemisphere issuing crystals and pressed glass flowers in the style of the Metropolitan Opera fixtures.
Traditional offerings include a set of six Nineteenth Century American stenciled and ebonized side chairs with decorated crest rails and back splats on turned legs joined by stretchers. Next are a pair of American folk art faux grained and caned wooden side chairs with arched backrests and vase splats above a caned scrolling seat on turned legs with stretchers.
Also of note are an American Windsor arm chair with a yolk back and vertically turned spindles and a George III-style chair in the French manner. Lighting includes a pair of Victorian Orientalist brass lamps with deep golden silk fringe.
The sale will also include a selection of jewelry, designer costume jewelry and luxury goods, including handbags by Judith Leiber, Marc Jacobs and Gucci, along with scarves by Gucci, Hermes and Yves Saint Laurent. The sale also includes a collection of vintage Karl Lagerfeld striped tops.
Decorative arts highlights include a secessionist Jugendstil lidded two-handled urn vessel in hammered and a repoussé brass and a Maison Edouard Rambaud (French form, founded 1984) Paris, “Soleil” mirror, in the “sun in splendor” form. Also of note are a Russian lacquer icon egg depicting the Feodorovskaya Mother of God within gilded decoration and a Tiffany & Co. Brass carriage clock. The sale features a collection of American art pottery by Roseville, Weller and Van Briggel. Vintage glass vases by Tiffany, Baccarat, Alvar Aalto, Peter Hewitt, Jacqueline Terpins and Richard Silver are also on offer. Of note is a Baccarat crystal standing horse trophy designed for the United States Equestrian Team.
Asian collectors will find a grouping of Chinese antiques from brush pots to censers.
Entertainers will find glassware from Sasaki “Wings” design, bone china from Coalport England and Wedgwood and Tiffany & Co sterling silver hors d’oeuvres forks
Other interesting highlights include a collection of Russian, Ukrainian and Greek icons.
