ASTORIA, N.Y. — On November 13, Auctions at Showplace will premiere the next installation of the firm’s Backstage Astoria NY auctions. These auctions are conducted from Showplace’s new warehouse facility in Astoria. Showplace will present 460 lots of fine and decorative art. Highlights include Midcentury Modern furniture, designer handbags, paintings, prints and posters. Porcelain, glass, lighting and jewelry complete the sale.
Art highlights open with a large Neoclassical hand-painted landscape mural on canvas depicting an Italian garden with fountain and architectural elements by Evergreene Architectural Arts. Next is a lithograph by Pierre-Auguste Renoir of famed art dealer Ambroise Vollard. The piece is from “L’Album des Douze Lithographies Originales de Pierre-Auguste Renoir” (Delteil 37), 1904, signed in plate lower right. Also on offer by Pierre-Auguste Renoir is a plate signed lithograph from “L’Album des Douze Lithographies Originales de Pierre-Auguste Renoir” (Delteil 39), 1904, titled “Claude Renoir, La Tete Baisee” (Claude Renoir, The Head Lowered).
Also included is a color woodcut on paper from an edition of 50 by Clifton Karhu titled “Winter Pond Kyoto” depicting a winter scene in Japan; a Mary Stevenson Cassatt drypoint titled “The Manicure” from 1908; a still life landscape on canvas by American artist Jon Legere titled “Standing Still,” an oil on canvas depicting a barn door with vessels; an abstract silkscreen in colors with modern geometric shapes, by Max Bill titled “System of Four Equal Color Groups,” pencil signed, numbered and dated lower right. The sale also includes work by James Russell, Robert J. Cariola, Romain de Tirtoff (Erte), Lynne Loshbaugh, Naftali Bezem and more.
The sale offers a wide range of furniture. Traditional offerings include a Baker Furniture campaign-style mahogany bedroom set sold separately. Also on offer is a late Eighteenth Century American mahogany Hepplewhite drop leaf Pembroke table with a drawer with a brass handle. Of note is a pair of Kittinger Asian modern lamp tables with etched floral pattern to the surface of the table and an Arts and Crafts oak hall stand, circa 1910, with a stylized foliate crest rail and sides with hooks for coats centering a mirror, above a hinged lidded bench for storage.
Modern offerings include a Charles & Ray Eames “Soft Pad” swivel office chair upholstered with gray leather. Next is a 1970s Charles Pfister for Knoll three-seater sofa upholstered in gray and brown tweed followed by a Charles Pfister for Knoll International arm chair in matching upholstery. There is also a George Nelson for Herman Miller midcentury full-size bed rosewood headboard from the “Thin Edge” group introduced in 1962 and a Charles Eames for Herman Miller Midcentury Modern black wire swivel chair, raised on a stainless four-stars base and upholstered black pad. Also on offer are a set of five vintage 1980s “Chiclet” chairs in the style of Ray Wilkes and a Philippe Starck for Kartell “Small Ghost Buster” cabinet side table in translucent smoke acrylic.
Lighting on offer includes a wood and metal Barbara Cosgrove horse table lamp.
Also of note is a Buckingham Palace letter from George V (British, 1865-1936) issued to members of the Dominion Forces after World War I, 1918, matted and housed under glass in a wood frame with gilt border.
Decorative arts offerings include a set of three green and amber glass fan vases by Steuben and a pair of Frank Lloyd Wright for Tiffany and Company crystal candlestick holders of faceted hexagonal form. Next is a Jean Spouse cold-cast bronze sculpture with brown patina, depicting a pug dog on a suitcase. Also on offer is a Robinson Ransbottom vintage American studio art pottery ceramic clair de lune light blue glazed umbrella stand or large vase with two molded handles.
Silver seekers will find a midcentury Tiffany & Co. sterling silver basket weave dish in the form of a woven Nantucket basket and a pair of Mueck-Carey Co weighted sterling candlesticks in the Neoclassical manner standing on square bases with chamfered corners.
Entertainers will find a Midcentury Modern assembled service of glasses by Danish maker Homegaard followed by a Pietrina Checcacci “Feet” bronze bottle opener, stamped “Checcacci” on bottom. Next is a Reed & Barton silverplate Sierra pattern (designed 1914) part dinner service each piece marked “Pat Appld For” and “Reed & Barton.” Next is a Villeroy & Boch assembled porcelain coffee / tea service of 48 pieces in the Siena pattern designed circa 1984 and a Castleton China dinner service for 12 in the Lace pattern. Next is an Edward VII period wine funnel in the Regency taste, struck with the hallmarks of Charles Edwards, London 1908, to rim of funnel and to body of strainer. Also on offer are a set of six crystal champagne glasses by Cartier, France and a Cartier glass ice bucket with a stainless steel handle; several lots of Baccarat crystal glassware, including a lot of champagne flutes, red wine glasses, white wine glasses and snifter glasses. Lastly is a Los Castillo, Taxco, Mexico, silverplated wine service set and a pair of Christofle silverplated cups.
