WINDSOR, CONN. — Nadeau’s Auction Gallery has announced its annual New Year’s Day sale starting at 10 am on January 1. This event features premier estates from the New England and the mid-Atlantic regions, including property sourced from several homes and collections, including the estate of Dr Vallo Benjamin of East 57th Street in New York; the estate of Cyril H. Moore Jr of Kent, Conn.; the estate of Alexis Gregory, sold to benefit the Alexis Gregory Foundation; the estate of Peter Tillou of Litchfield, Conn.; and private estates from Redding, Enfield and Greenwich, Conn.
According to Eddie Nadeau, president of Nadeau’s Auction Gallery, “Although my family and I have presented a premier sale on New Year’s Day for over 30 years now, I can’t remember a more impressive group of merchandise than what’s on offer for January 1, 2023. World-class highlights top each auction category. The angel stained glass window by Tiffany Studios is even more beautiful in person and one of my favorite items in the entire sale. Its presence in our gallery over the holiday season feels like a blessing. Our signature New Year’s Day sale has broken the seven-figure mark several times in the past and I would not be surprised if this one ranks up there as well. Good luck to all our bidders!”
Silver, jewelry and timepiece highlights include a platinum ring set with a 10.07-carat pear-shaped brilliant diamond flanked by tapered baguette diamonds and is accompanied with its GIA certificate ($40/60,000). A convertible platinum diamond bracelet has a total weight of 27.24 carats ($15/25,000).
A set of eight Louis XVI silver candlesticks is comprised of six sticks by Jean-Jacques Kirstein of Strasbourg and two sticks made to match by Josee Allard of Brussels, all marked and with a total weight of 203 ozt ($25/40,000). A pair of George III candelabra designed and made by London silversmiths William Pitts and William Elliot around 1809 includes provenance to a 1971 sale at Christie’s London ($20/30,000).
Leading in the timepiece category is a 2006 Patek Philippe 18K Grand Complications annual calendar wristwatch, model 5036, that features a glass back. It comes with its original presentation box, registration and paperwork, as well as an extra link for sizing flexibility ($20/30,000). It is followed by a Rolex GMT Pepsi man’s wristwatch from 1967 that has a legacy design, named after its similarity to the Pepsi-Cola logo, and is one of the most sought-after Rolex models among collectors and enthusiasts. ($10/15,000)
Fine art and paintings by important Nineteenth and Twentieth Century artists are another premier category, showcasing a tapestry by Alexander Calder produced by CAC publications/Bon Art in 1975. It is from a private New York collection and is being sold to benefit charitable foundations ($10/20,000). Milton Clark Avery’s (1885-1965) “Rolling Hills” is from a private collection from Irvington, N.Y., and includes an authentication letter from The Milton and Sally Avery Arts Foundation of New York City ($15/25,000). Charles William Peale’s oil on copper “Portrait of Edmund Physick” depicts the Receiver General and Keeper of the Great Seal of the province of Pennsylvania. It was exhibited in Philadelphia in 1889 and featured in Charles Coleman Sellers’ Portraits and Miniatures by Charles Willson Peale (1952) ($20/40,000).
The decorative arts category features several things made by Tiffany Studios of New York City.
A circa 1910 Tiffany Studios hanging light was acquired recently for $56,000 at Christie’s New York and features a bronze crown form top over a molded bubble teardrop art glass shade ($15/25,000). A circa 1905 Tiffany Studios angel window features colored leaded drapery and feather glass within a replaced oak frame and is marked Tiffany Studios New York on its bottom center. It was used only one other known time, in the upper section of the Charles and Isabella Steele McLaughlin Hays Memorial Window in the First Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh, Penn. ($20/40,000).
