BEVERLY, MASS. — Kaminski’s annual Thanksgiving auction, Saturday and Sunday, November 26-27, at 11 am EST, is dedicated to Mary Westcott in honor of her 90th birthday. Mary has worked as a senior appraiser at Kaminski Auctions for more than 32 years and is well-known throughout the antiques industry.
Mary started her career as an educator. She taught school, and later in her professional career, she served as guidance director at Westford Academy in Westford, Mass. She served as president of the Massachusetts School Counselors Association and was awarded its highest honor.
Upon retirement from a successful career in education, she took a course to become an antiques appraiser. She met Frank Kaminski in the 1980s and attended his first auction on Brattle Street, Cambridge, in 1987. Frank asked Mary to do some appraisal events and later she joined the staff as an appraiser, cataloger, auction consultant and auctioneer and learned every facet of the auction industry. During the past 32 years, she has had many exciting and challenging experiences. The most memorable was the appraisal of artifacts at the Grand Canyon Hotel. Mary was essential to Kaminski Auctions’ success, including auctions with Martha Stewart and Oprah Winfrey. “My life has been enriched by the association with Frank and his staff,” she said, and the auction house said it has been fortunate to have her as a part of its team.
This year’s Thanksgiving auction features items from numerous Boston, Palm Beach and local New England estates. The sculpture category leads the auction highlights with two entries by the Cuban sculptor Augustín Cárdenas (1927-2001), who studied at the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Art. He was active in the Surrealist movement in Paris, and his sculptures are said to be influenced by Brâncusi, Henry Moore and Jean Arp. The sale features two sculptures by Cárdenas, the first a wooden statue, standing 64 inches high, signed, and dated 56, on the base. Its height, including the base, is 82 inches; and the second is a bronze and black patina titled “Embracing Couple,” 1981, signed with the artist’s monogram. It is numbered 3/9 and measures 23½ by 9 by 6 inches.
There is a circa 1970 Harry Bertoia bush sculpture in bronze and brass. It is welded and maintains its original patina. It is approximately 12 by 12 inches and includes a letter dated April 31, 1974.
A signed, circa 1932 Picasso sculpture of a bronze head with gold and brown patina, probably of Marie-Therese Walter, measures 19½ by 12½ inches ($20/30,000). Along with the Picasso is a Fernando Botero (Colombian, b 1932) bronze sculpture, titled “La Mano,” numbered 2/9, on a plinth.
An American sculpture on offer is “Appeal to the Great Spirit,” 1906, by Charles Henry Humphriss (American, 1867-1934). There is also a large bronze group sculpture depicting a Native American hunting water buffalo with a bow and arrow, signed “C.M. Russell” and dated 1905, after Charles Marion Russell (American, 1864-1926).
Contemporary art on offer features a small original work by Willem de Kooning, an abstract oil on paper board ($5/8,000) from the estate of the late James Crandall of Connecticut, a World War II veteran and Purple Heart recipient who worked for de Kooning for ten years before semi-retirement. There is also a de Kooning lithograph print, 125/200, dated 1979, and signed in pencil, and a Roy Lichtenstein (American, 1923-1997), offset lithograph, printed in colors, 1963-64, signed in pencil, of the “Crak!” (Corlett II.2) edition.
American art features a Nineteenth Century oil on canvas portrait of George Washington, after Gilbert Stuart that has been in a Newburyport estate for generations.
A local North Shore of Boston personality, the late Nondas Lagonakis of Salem, Mass., was the owner of Bill & Bob’s Roast Beef. He was an avid collector of European paintings and sculptures. The Thanksgiving auction features several from his estate, including an oil on panel painting titled “The Crucifixion” after Sir Peter Paul Rubens, “The Last Communion of St Jerome,” oil on canvas after Domenico Zampieri, “The Death of Seneca,” oil on canvas from the circle of Sebastiano Ricci (Eighteenth Century) and a Continental School, (late Eighteenth/early Nineteenth Century) of “The Madonna of the Rabbit,” after Tiziano Vecellio (“Titian”).
Jewelry in the auction includes a lady’s Rolex Datejust automatic watch, model 6917, 26mm, stainless steel case, with an 18K yellow gold fluted bezel, a custom mother-of-pearl dial with diamonds and emeralds and a two-tone Jubilee bracelet, a lady’s 18K yellow gold diamond engagement ring, with center diamond and six channel set side diamond, and an Omega gold Seamaster calendar automatic wristwatch.
Other highlights include modern furniture from designer Jay Spectre; a pair of Mies van der Rohe for Knoll, circa 1976, Barcelona collection chairs in stainless metal and brown leather; two Louis Vuitton cabin trunks; a 12-inch British terrestrial globe from 1802, marked T.M. Bardin, Salisbury Square, London; Asian items and a collection of sports memorabilia from a Beverly owner that includes famous moments in Boston sports history.
