COPAKE, N.Y. — Copake Auction will hold its 43rd Annual New Year’s Day Auction on Sunday, January 1, at 10 am. The sale will feature 765 quality lots. The auction will be live online and in-person with limited seating by appointment. Previews will take place through December 31, 10 am until 4 pm daily.
This year’s sale features a quality and varied selection, including 300 lots from the Barbara Packer Estate, Germantown, N.Y., and New York City. According to the Fallons, Barbara was a friend and customer for more than 20 years and had a wonderful collection of folk art, period furnishings, cigar store figures and samplers. Items from the Gliedman Estate, New York City, will also be featured, including Shaker furniture and accessories, folk art, game boards, decoys and weathervanes. A collection of mangle boards, tramp art and irons will be sold from the Sue and Dave Irons Collection. Dave was a prominent collector and author of irons and a friend of Mike Fallon. Items from the well-known shop Cupboards and Roses in Great Barrington, Mass., will include Swedish furniture, Continental mirrors and accessories including a large Seventeenth Century Italian carved frame. A collection of portraits will be sold from a Westchester County Collection.
Highlights include an original Cream of Wheat illustration by Jessie Wilcox Smith. Copake Auction sold a collection of Cream of Wheat illustrations from the same collection some years ago and are happy to offer this example, which the collector held onto until now. Other art objects of interest include a Hudson River School painting attributed to Asher B. Durand, a portrait of George Washington attributed to Jane Stuart and a dog portrait by Maude Earle. An impressive Eighteenth Century New Paltz kas will be sold along with tall case clocks, period seating and mirrors, chests of drawers, highboys and lowboys, tea tables, candlestands, cupboards and more period accessories.
The auction features 65 Shaker lots, 25 sandpaper drawings, 20 samplers, 70 lots of tramp art, quilts, Oriental rugs, weathervanes and windmill weights among other treasures.
