BEDFORD, N.Y. — An impressive collection of watches and clocks highlights Butterscotch Auction Gallery’s upcoming spring estates auction to take place on March 26.
Nearly one-third of the sale represents items from the collection of William D. Fraad — primarily an important collection of clocks and museum-quality watches previously appraised in 1994 by the horologist of a noted Manhattan auction house. More than 150 watches will be offered from the Fraad collection, including a rare Patek Philippe two train trip split repeater, a rare 18K duplex watch for the Chinese market by Courvoisier & Co., automaton watches and more.
Some of the more impressive clocks include a Black, Starr & Frost Art Deco desk clock, a Nineteenth Century French industrial beam engine clock, a lapis lazuli and silver mounted tower clock and a late Nineteenth Century Tiffany & Co. Renaissance Revival tall case clock. Important timepieces from other estates will cross the block as well. From a Bedford estate is part two of a large collection of Chelsea ship’s clocks, following the first half offered in December 2022. Descended through the estate of Robert Corry Kerr, founder of American Thread Company, is an important 18K Tiffany & Co. repeater watch.
Also consigned from the Fraad Collection are notable works of art: a pencil on paper work by George Wesley Bellows (1882-1925), a colorful watercolor by Nell Blair Walden Blaine (1922-1996), three Joan Miro etchings and much more. From the same collection is a rare Tiffany & Co. 4-quart water pitcher in the Chrysanthemum pattern, measuring 12¾ inches tall and weighing 54 troy ounces.
Another notable consignment is the Sontheimer collection of antiquarian cookbooks: a comprehensive survey of the arts of cookery, confectionery and related subjects, spanning four centuries, collected by Carl Sontheimer, inventor of the Cuisinart food processor. Highlights among this important collection include a signed first edition of The Jewish Manual by Lady Judith Montefiore (1846) and a first edition copy of Theatre d’Agriculture et Mesnage des Champs by Olivier de Serres (1600). More than 200 books across 44 lots will be offered from the Sontheimer collection.
Butterscotch’s spring sale will feature hundreds of items sourced from New York area estates, including fine art, decorative arts, Asian arts, jewelry, furniture and more. Works by artists, including Albert Bierstadt, George H. Boughton, John Frederick Kensett, Yolande Ardissone and Fernando de Szyszlo will cross the block. An exceptional watercolor attributed to Honore Daumier is the auction’s cover lot.
Seekers of antique jewelry will have much to admire, including an antique Colombian emerald ring, boasting an approximately 20-carat natural emerald flanked by four baguette diamonds in a platinum setting (accompanied by an AGL report).
The live auction will commence on Sunday, March 26, at 10:30 am EST, with bidding available by phone, absentee and online. The auction will take place at 608 Old Post Road, with preview for selected items on Friday and Saturday, March 24-25, from 11 am to 5 pm.
