SARASOTA, FLA. — Andrew Ford, owner and auctioneer of Sarasota Estate Auction, has obtained some important fine art for his two-day sale, January 7-8. Headlining this 1,100-lot auction will be works by the two of the top Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century American portrait artists: John Singer Sargent and Gilbert Stuart; along with Twentieth Century American artists Joan Mitchell and Fernando Botero. The sale also includes more than 50 lots of estate jewelry and multiple luxury designer handbags.
John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) is an artist that will be offered at the beginning of the second auction day. Offered is a signed and dated portrait that depicts Elisabeth Mills Reid who was one of the leading female philanthropists of the early Twentieth Century, and daughter of Darius Ogden Mills. Elizabeth Mills and John Singer Sargent were both confirmed at Holy Trinity in 1874. As the two became more prominent in their respective fields, they united once again in the creation of this iconic charcoal. According to the Reid Hall archives, the original 1912 charcoal portrait sketch of Elizabeth Mills Reid is yet to be found. Their image of the charcoal — a photograph on their website — appears to be the exact same as that at Sarasota Estate Auctions.
Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828) is also one of America’s foremost portraitists. Dating to the first quarter of the Nineteenth Century, this unsigned oil on canvas is attributed to Stuart, who painted approximately 75 “Athenaeum-type” portraits of Washington. Though each version is clearly based on one source, the individual works often have distinct appearances, with variations in costume and/or background.
Joan Mitchell (1925-1992) was one of the most prominent members of the second generation of Abstract Expressionists. She was also one of the only female artists of her generation to achieve critical and public acclaim. This untitled chalk pastel on paper, with vivid blue and red abstract imagery, is pencil signed in the lower right.
Fernando Botero (b 1932) is considered the most recognized and quoted living artist from Latin America. Botero’s signature style, also known as “Boterismo,” depicts people and figures in large, exaggerated volume, which can represent political criticism or humor, depending on the piece. This heavy carved wood sculpture is of a gentleman wearing a hat and seated atop a horse, with a riding crop in hand.
An 18K yellow gold and pearl necklace will be offered on day one of the auction. This is an impressive strand of 50 handmade 18K gold nests, each with its own lustrous 3.5mm Akoya pearls.
The first day will include modern design, fine art and more than 50 lots of unreserved jewelry. Both days include art from other noteworthy artists, including Hunt Slonem, David Burliuk, Syd Solomon, Fern Coppedge, Andre Gisson, Peter Max, Malcolm Furlow, Howard Chesner Behrens, Harold Newton, Francisco Echauz, and many more. There is also a Jorge Blanco sculpture, luxury bags, including Judith Leiber and Fendi, Knoll Saarinen white and red side chairs, Herend porcelain, a Kieff Grediaga JergasSculpture, sterling silver and a three-piece Kirk & Son sterling silver tea set that weighs 70 ozt.
