ASTORIA, QUEENS, N.Y. — On January 15, Auctions at Showplace will present the next Showplace Backstage, Astoria NY auction with 460 lots of treasures from New York metropolitan area estates and collections. These auctions are conducted from Showplace’s warehouse facility in Astoria.
Fine art highlights open with “Is Beauty Bondage,” a serigraph by Alexi Allens depicting three ladies’ heads with squares. Next is an oil on canvas depicting a Hawaiian landscape by American painter James Coleman. It is followed by a religious scene on masonite by Italian artist Giulio Salvadori. Also of note is a lithograph by Navajo artist Rudolph Carl Gorman and a signed Milton Glaser poster for the 26th NY Film Festival. Sculpture is highlighted by a ceramic sculpture by Jose Rodriguez Fuster, an Outsider art mixed media by San Francisco sculptor Max Liebler and a patinated plaster bust of Abraham Lincoln by Joseph Konzal. A Belgian landscape by Michel Jamart, a cityscape on canvas depicting “L’Arc de Triomphe” by Lisandro Lopez Baylon and a floral still life by June Groff round out fine art highlights.
Asian arts and antiques open with an antique Korean celadon-glazed pottery vase of bottle form with embedded lotus flower designs. Next is a Twentieth Century Chinese carved carnelian agate vase with motifs of perched birds and flowers. It is followed by a Chinese exotic red wood six-door tall cabinet with metal hardware and a Chinese cinnabar lacquer round box carved in relief with a scene of figures within a landscape surrounded by trees and mountains and pagodas.
Furniture on offer appeals to tastes ranging from Victorian to Renaissance Revival and Art Deco to Midcentury Modern.
Modern offerings open with a set of four Arne Emil Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen Scandinavian dining chairs. Next are two lots of vintage 1970s Italian Elam sofas upholstered in light brown velvet with a geometrical motif. It is followed by an American Midcentury Modern Kent Coffey Perspecta horizontal walnut mirror and an Eames for Herman Miller Midcentury Modern fiberglass shell chair. Also of note is a Soborg Mobelfabrik Danish Midcentury Modern bookcase.
Traditional offerings open with a gray painted Louis XVI-style three-way mirror by “Miroir Brot” with ribbon twist and beaded moldings and rosettes to corners. Next is an antique George III-style mahogany veneered desk followed by an Austrian Biedermeier parcel ebonized walnut corner cabinet with an angled top above a triple-glazed door. There is also a Hancock & Moore Chesterfield-style executive swivel office armchair, upholstered with button tufted brown leather. Closing out the section are an American carved tiger oak chest of drawers with brass hardware, circa 1900, and an American antique Arts and Craft oak umbrella stand.
Backstage at Showplace is full of glitz and glamor. The sale includes a collection of jewelry. Of note is a Jacmel Mauritius designer 14K yellow and white gold beaded adjustable length choker necklace and a Rugiada 18K yellow gold ring featuring a cabochon cut and bar set amethyst and peridot. Next is an Italian made Barry Kieselstein Cord collectible luxury green leather drawstring bucket bag and a gray tweed purse by Prada with Swarovski purple, black and clear crystal patterns to the front. The sale features a collection of vintage Hermes silk scarves, including pieces designed by Annie Faivre, Caty Latham, Catherine Baschet, Catherine Baschet, Niki Goulandris and Zoe Pauwels. In time for winter is a Howard Marcus New York mink fur full-length coat.
Decorative objects from around the globe will also be offered. Decorative arts highlights include a collection of Frederick Carder for Steuben pieces such as a pair of “Triple Stump” bud vases, one in green and one in amber glass. Next isa pair of Carder for Steuben engraved Celadon and alabaster glass white wine glasses (shape number 3551) in the York pattern, followed by a Carder for Steuben rose cluthra glass vase (shape no. 2683). Next is a collection of vintage Lalique crystal, including a pair of perfume bottles in the Deux Fleurs pattern, a trinket box in the Canards pattern and a trinket box in the Enfants pattern. Also of note is a Baccarat midcentury free-form centerpiece crystal bowl and a Tiffany & Co. French ceramic octagonal cache pot hand-painted with chinoiserie motifs in the manner of Moustiers.
Entertainers will delight at a Meissen German porcelain assembled part breakfast service in the Streublumen or Scattered Blossoms pattern and a French Theodore Haviland assembled Limoges porcelain dinner service of 104 pieces in the Nosegay pattern. Also on offer is a Villeroy & Boch assembled porcelain coffee/tea service of 48 pieces in the Siena pattern designed circa 1984.
Also of note is a group of 27 leather bound Easton Press Books from the “The 100 Greatest Books Ever Written.” Showplace will also be hosting a tag sale from its Astoria Warehouse on January 27, 28 and 29 from 10 am to 5 pm each day with new items being added throughout the weekend.
