THOMASTON, MAINE — On February 24, 25 and 26 at 11 am, Thomaston Place Auction Galleries will present a collection of rarities and fresh-to-the-market finds. The sale will include selections of paintings and sculpture, estate jewelry, antique and modern furniture, folk art, collectibles, Asian artifacts and decorative accessories.
Thomaston Place owner and auctioneer Kaja Veilleux said, “This sale offers an intriguing and diverse inventory, with items ranging from the Seventeenth Century to the Twenty-First Century, and items to appeal to all collecting tastes.”
There will be a substantial group of Old Master paintings, including a work depicting a view in southern France by Claude Le Lorrain (French, 1600-1682), a painting titled “The Carnival” by Jean-Baptiste Pater (French, 1695-1736), and two unsigned late Seventeenth Century harbor scenes depicting Dutch warships.
Leading contemporary paintings will include a watercolor and graphite work titled “Study for Island Geese” by Jamie Wyeth (b 1946 ); “Flora,” a 1966 painting by Rene Portocarrero (Cuban, 1912-1985); a 1956 oil on Masonite work by Gertrude Abercrombie (1909-1977) depicting a leaf and chaise lounge; “Winter Night” a 1995 work by Maine artist Linden Frederick (b 1953); and three Cubist abstract paintings by Serge Charchoune (Russian-French, 1888-1975).
A signed 1965 offset lithograph in four colors titled “Shipboard Girl” by Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997) will be offered, along with an Andy Warhol (1929-1987) “Campbell’s Soup” (Cream of Mushroom) 1968 limited edition serigraph.
The sale will also include artwork by William Rowland Davis (1879-1944), James Edward Buttersworth (1817-1894), Thomas Sully (1783-1872), Everett Lloyd Bryant (1864-1965), Dean Cornwell (1892-1960), Antonio Saura (Spanish, 1930-1998), Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902), Aaron Draper Shattuck (1832-1928), Robert Swain Gifford (1840-1905), William Dethlef Koerner (1878-1938), Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009) and many others.
A large carved and polychrome painted rooster by itinerant artist Wilhelm Schimmel (1817-1890) will lead the folk art offerings along with a carved fish design tete-a-tete chair by Stephen Huneck (1948-2010); and a carved wall-mounted eagle figurehead, possibly from a Nineteenth Century US Navy officer’s launch. The sale will also offer three weathervanes, five ship models and 13 scrimshaw decorated whale’s teeth.
The 196-lot estate jewelry and watch collection will include a vintage platinum and gold ring center set with a 4.55-carat Old European cut diamond, an Elwood Van Clief platinum ring set with 4.49-carat natural emerald flanked by trillion cut diamonds and a Cartier 18K gold woven choker form necklace in original box.
Featured among the large selection of Asian artifacts will be a Chinese Ming dynasty period gilt-bronze seated Guanyin figure, a pair of Chinese imperial yellow square porcelain vases with four-character Qianlong mark and a Japanese Meiji period “Cracked Ice” pattern maki lacquer tansu box.
The diverse furniture collection will include two pietra dura inlaid marble octagonal top tables; a rare Pilgrim century mushroom arm slat-back armchair; an Eighteenth Century French provincial blue painted armoire; a Heywood Wakefield Topaz blonde finish dining set; and many other antique, midcentury and contemporary pieces.
The sale will also present art pottery by Grueby, Rookwood and Harrison McIntosh (1914-2016); and glass pieces by Tiffany Studios, Loetz and Steuben.
Other items of interest will include a handcrafted canoe from Sebec, Maine; Judith Lieber evening bags; and a Bally “Amigo” pinball machine. On Friday, February 25, collections of luxury pens, inkwells, Mettlach steins, tea caddies, early toys and World War II war bond posters will be sold.
The gallery will be open for previews from Monday through Friday, February 13-17 (9 am to 4 pm); Saturday, February 18 (10 am to 3 pm); and Monday through Thursday, February 20-23 (9 am to 4 pm). Previewing will also be available on auction days, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, February 24, 25 and 26, from 9 to 11 am.
