HARRISBURG, PENN. — The photograph of the Wright Flyer from 1903 and fabric segment will be offered at Cordier Auctions on February 25. The lot also includes an inscription by Orville Wright that reads, “This little piece of wing covering did its part in lifting the plane in this flight. O.W.”
The rare artifact was consigned to Cordier Auctions by a York, Penn., individual whose grandmother, Mrs John (Bess) Daugherty, served on the Wright library board of directors with Orville Wright from 1923 to 1946. Also included in the family’s consignment is a large photographic image of the Wright Flyer and hangar at Kitty Hawk along with Christmas cards from Orville Wright to the Daugherty family.
The significant historical relic will be sold in Cordier’s fine and decorative arts auction, which also features “La Mariee” by Marcel DuChamp (French, 1887-1968), a Thomas Moser Windward sofa and chair and a 1.56-carat platinum diamond ring.
A day earlier, on February 24, selections from approximately 1,500 works of art by Connecticut artist Revington Arthur that were discovered in State College, Penn., after being stored there since the 1980s will cross the block.
Arthur, from Stamford, Conn., was a well-established artist during the 1940s through the 1970s. He exhibited at prominent artist institutions and had showings at galleries across the Northeast, including New York City. In 1945, one of his works, “The Green Pool,” was published in Time Magazine as critics’ choice.
His work evolved in style, but he primarily worked in acrylic, oil and watercolor. He is considered an expressionist or abstractionist; some of his works could even be described as surrealistic.
Arthur’s early artistic education in the 1920s and 1930s took him to such distinguished institutions as the Grand Central School of Art and the Artist Student League in New York City, as well as the George P. Ennis School in Eastport, Maine. By the 1940s he was studying art history at Columbia in New York. Like many artists, his education included working under more established artists. His influence and training came from the likes of George Luks, Arshile Gorky and Kimon Nicolaiedes.
Most prolific from the 1940s to the 1970s, Arthur exhibited his work in both solo and group shows at notable venues such as the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, the Carnegie Museum of Art and the Connecticut Academy of Fine Art, among others. And during the 1940s and 1950s, his works and style were also published in art and general publications, including Time Magazine, Esquire, Art Digest and American Artist.
