NEW YORK CITY — On February 19 Auctions at Showplace will present 280 lots of fine and decorative arts directly from New York City metropolitan area estates and collections, including works of art by Johnnie Winona Ross, Tom Wesselmann, Louis Mendez, Leon Kroll, Larry Zox and Alice Zinnes. Other highlights include antique furniture like a George III mahogany slant front desk with bookcase and a Seventeenth Century William and Mary chest on stand, as well as more modern furniture and decorative arts by Christian Liagre, Vladimir Kagan and Alvar Aalto. A wide array of jewelry, antiquities, artifacts, porcelain, glass, silver, lighting, sculptures, paintings and more complete the sale
Fine art opens with a 1961 untitled abstract oil painting with collage by Larry Zox with provenance from Stephen Haller Gallery. Modern offerings continue with an abstract diptych mixed media on canvas by Lloyd Martin with a Stephen Haller Gallery label and stamp to verso. Next is an untitled lithograph by Ralston Crawford depicting an abstract geometric composition from an edition of 15, followed by a Gregory Johnston enamel-on-aluminum plate titled “Kornamaranthtuerkis,” also from Stephen Haller Gallery. The sale includes a grouping of minimalist paintings by Johnnie Winona Ross from Stephen Haller Gallery. Also of note is an untitled abstract ink and watercolor drawing attributed to Wassily Kandinsky and two Vasa Velizar Mihich polychrome acrylic sculptures in the form of rectangular plinths. Traditional offerings include a charcoal and mixed media drawing on paper depicting a standing figure by Isidro Nonell y Monturillo, a street scene by Leon Kroll and a collection of street scenes by Charles Cobelle.
Decorative Arts highlights include a Tom Wesselmann for Rosenthal “Stilleben” ceramic porcelain plaque depicting a still life scene with fruit and a framed picture of a blonde woman. Also on offer is an antique Grand Tour gilt and patinated bronze sculpture of infant Hercules fighting a serpent atop the Nemean lion skin after Guglielmo della Porta (Italian, 1515-1577). Highlights also include a George Grant Elmslie cast and glazed pier capital architectural element from the Oliver Morten School in Hammond, Ind., circa 1936, now mounted on a tiered veneered bronze-tone pedestal.
Asian arts include a Sukhothai period monumental fragmentary stucco head of Buddha or bodhisattva mounted on pedestal, circa 1450, purchased from Tucker and Tozer, London.
Furnishings open with a Napoleon III French Second Empire monumental ebonized and parcel silvered meuble d’appui cabinet with white marble top. Next is a George III mahogany slant front desk with bookcase, circa 1800. An elongated rectangular form Art Deco walnut dining room buffet credenza continues the collection. Also of note is a Romeo Rega patinated brass collection etagere, rectangular, with staggered glass mounted shelves for use for collection display, books or as a room divider.
Modern offerings include a pair of Folke Ohlsson for Dux of Sweden teak Scissor chairs, a John Widdicomb for Mastercraft modern console with a black lacquered chamfered top and three shallow drawers with gilt metal pulls and a Vladimir Kagan for Preview six-piece modular sofa (designed 1987) each piece upholstered in original beige wool boucle. The collection continues with a pair of Josef Hoffmann “Cabaret Fledermaus” chairs. A large modern Jim Davidson figural bronze cast nude woman swimmer glass coffee table or cocktail table is also on offer.
Lighting by Isamu Noguchi, Christian Liaigre, Verrerie des Hanots, Hettier et Vincent, Venini and George Kovacs round out the offerings.
Silver seekers will find a Hans Schmid Hanau German 800 silver dinner service in a restrained rococo pattern for 12, each piece marked “800” and “HS” for Hans Schmid of Hanau. Next is an Edward VII sterling silver Arts and Crafts wine cooler with hallmarks for Williams, Birmingham Ltd., Birmingham, circa 1903 and an Art Nouveau/Jugendstil Austrian 800 silver Art Nouveau open sugar bowl and covered milk pitcher (possibly a chocolate pot) set, with hallmarks for Vienna, circa 1900.
The sale also includes an exciting offering of estate jewelry and luxury goods.
