SARASOTA, FLA. — Andrew Ford, owner and auctioneer of Sarasota Estate Auction, has obtained some rare art for his two-day sale, March 4-5. Headlining this 1,400-lot auction will be the first day dedicated to a one-owner lifetime collection of sterling silver, followed by the second day with works by Karl Gerstner and Orville Bulman.
Karl Gerstner (1930-2017) is an artist that will be offered at the beginning of the second auction day.
This is an important large color relief painting consisting of pastel yellow, peach and orange colored wood panels within an aluminum frame. The painting was exhibited in 1968 at the groundbreaking International Contemporary Art Fair. Purchased directly from the artist, the piece was lent to the exhibition in 1968. The check from the purchase and a letter of appreciation from Gerstner will accompany the lot.
Orville Bulman (1904-1978) is known for fantasy, genre, portrait and coastal view paintings. A self-taught artist, Bulman worked as a newspaper cartoonist before assisting in running the family business. One of his fantasy scenes of a boat with figures and animals will be auctioned off on the second day as well. Titled “La Paraise,” this is signed in the lower right.
Starting off the silver sale will be a Gorham Martelé sterling three-handled cup produced in Providence, R.I. This was likely made by the hand of Henry H. Barker and finished/chased by Robert Bain. Martelé is a limited hand-wrought production line of silver, making this very sought-after. Several loving cups can be found in the Martelé archives, and this particular form can be found twice between 1901 and 1904.
A monumental William Bateman English sterling salver on four heavy scrolled acanthus shaped feet will be the second lot on the first day. Made by William Bateman, London, circa 1820, this was engraved with the Wyndam family motto and crest.
A pair of Van Cleef & Arpels gold, sapphire and diamond earrings will be offered on day two of the auction. These clip earrings are 18K yellow gold, with 3.5mm sapphires and 1.5-carat diamonds.
Day one will include sterling silver from multiple makers, including Tiffany & Co; Gorham; Towle; Paul Revere; Grogan Company; Shreve, Crump & Low; Arthur J.
