PLAINVILLE, CONN. — On March 20, an auction starting at 5:30 pm at Winter Associates will offer a selection of early American furniture from Connecticut estates, including a Chapin School oxbow chest and drop leaf dining table, a William and Mary high chest and other chests, chairs, a variety of tables, etc. From other New England estates will be offered a wide assortment of Continental pieces, such as enamels and a large micromosaic, as well as a wide variety of Asian items, including woodblock prints, sculpture, cloisonné and ceramics. Fine art, including an oil painting exhibited in the 1913 Armory Show, other oil paintings, watercolors, etchings and lithographs and other furnishings, such as Margolis block front furniture, Royal Copenhagen Flora Danica and Herend porcelain, Tiffany and other silver, Steuben, Baccarat and Lalique glass, etc. will round out the sale.
The majority of the Americana in the sale is from a Middlebury, Conn., estate. The Chapin School circa 1795 oxbow (reverse serpentine) chest has the “quadrant” base assembly with canted/splayed feet ending in half round beaded toes that strongly indicates its origin. From the same estate is a William and Mary chest on stand or high chest, likely Boston, circa 1730-50, with walnut burl and crotch veneer and herringbone banding, as well as a Chippendale corner chair and three matching side chairs, all circa 1760 and featuring finely articulated ball and claw feet. From this home there was also a selection of Margolis Chippendale reproductions bench-made in the Hartford area in the early Twentieth Century, including a block front slant lid desk, block front chest of drawers, chest on chest, set of 10 side chairs and two wall mirrors.
Two high-end Swiss designer watches are also from the Middlebury estate: an 18K yellow gold E. Gubelin chronograph wristwatch featuring 17 jewels and three registers on cream colored dial; and a platinum Patek Philippe pocket watch boasting 18 jewels and retailed by Tiffany & Co.
Japanese woodblock prints collected over decades from a collector of Asian art in Berlin, Conn., will be part of the Asian selection in the auction. Four woodblocks by sought-after master Hasui Kawase (1883-1957) include: “Kozu, Osaka,” “Moon At Magome,” “Evening Snow At Ishonomaki” and “Futatsudo in Nikko.” Kawase was a prominent designer of the “Shin Hanga” new block print movement, inspired by travel and the Japanese countryside, he became a part of a new wave of Twentieth Century ukiyo-e artists that incorporated western elements, especially European Impressionism, into classical Japanese forms. Other Japanese woodblock artists featured in the March 20 sale include Shiro Kasamatsu, Katsushika Hokusai, Torii Kiyomasu, Torii Kiyomasu, as well as number of gilded and silvered mixed metal deity and mythological sculptures.
There will also be a selection of American paintings and prints in the sale. Cleveland Salter Rockwell (1837-1907) captured the wilderness of the Pacific Northwest in an oil landscape dated 1882, towering snow-covered peaks (likely Mount Rainier) dominate the composition and dwarf the figures in the foreground, a technique used by artists of the period to convey the sublime majesty of nature over man. Also of art historical significance, the oil portrait “George” by Bernard Karfiol (1886-1952) depicts the artist’s son as a young boy and was displayed at the 1913 Armory Show in New York City. An oil painting by Otto Anton Fischer of elephant caravan depicts the other side of the world. Fischer was a well-known book illustrator who provided art for the first editions of Moby-Dick and Treasure Island, as well as covers for The Saturday Evening Post and propaganda posters for the United States during World War II.
Other items of interest to cross the block include paintings by Benjamin Foster, George Herbet Macrum, Eric Isenburger, etc.; prints by Thomas Hart Benton, Maria Elena Viera da Silva, Jean-Francois Raffaelli, Elizabeth O’Neill Verner, Jay McVicker, Robert Kipness, William Behnken, Vera Andrus, George Plowman, Louis Legrand, Louis Orr, Ernest Roth, Jacques Callot, Edy Le-Grand, etc., sculpture to include bronze bust, 1889, signed “J. or F. Coosemans” and “J. Petermann, Fondeur Bruxelles.”
Continental enamel includes a large Nineteenth Century Viennese enamel table-top casket, guilloche enamel and silver vases, opera glasses, etc.; plus micromosaic of St Peter’s Basilica; Tiffany and other silver, including two sterling flatware sets by Gorham Décor and Greenbriar, Continental desk set, Russian cigar box, etc.; books (10 lots), including Rudyard Kipling, Collected Works, New York, 1941, 28 vols.; coins; Oriental rugs; sports and other collectible cards, etc.
