ALAMEDA, CALIF. — In April, Michaan’s will conduct four auctions. Starting the month off with its Annex auction from April 10-13, followed by the monthly gallery auction on Friday, April 14. Monday, April 17, will be a flagship day with two new specialty auctions. The first is a collectibles auction starting at 10 am, followed by a prints and multiples auction at 1 pm.
The gallery auction will open with a variety of furniture and decorative arts, including a Napoleon III-style ebonized buffet ($2/2,500). A Newcomb Pottery vase is also a shining star in the section as well as a highly sought-after Navajo third phase marked sterling concha belt with turquoise insets ($3,5/5,000).
The fine art section runs heavy on big name American artists like James Weeks. An oil on panel, “Landscape with Figures and Trees,” signed lower right is expected to fetch $7/8,000. Among some of the other American artists are a William Sheets still life, ($300/500) and a Tom Holland “Sako” sculpture ($800-$1,000).
Jewelry is right on time this month with a diamond, sapphire, cultured pearl, enamel, yellow gold, silver pendant watch ($2/3,000). Rounding out the section are two rings. The first is a diamond, 18K white gold ring ($9/12,000). The second is an unheated 16.40-carat Sri Lankan sapphire, diamond, white gold ring ($8/12,000).
The gallery auction will conclude with a collection of Asian art spanning several genres, from Chinese cloisonne to Japanese tansu furniture. This includes items like a three-section Japanese tansu cabinet ($500/800). There is also a Tibetan thangka of a lama ($1/1,500). There is a large cloisonne statue of a standing Buddha ($800-$1,200) and vases depicting longevity gods ($600/800).
Michaan’s flagship day, Monday, April 17, starts off with collectibles. This auction features comic books like Journey Into Mystery #83 ($6/8,000). A 1934 Steelcraft fire truck pedal car estimated at $1,5/2,000 and a carved wood carousel horse made by Stein and Goldstein, circa 1908 ($1,5/2,000) are included. There will also be classic memorabilia like a collection of Hank Williams family photographs spanning several generations ($400/600).
Prints and multiples feature artists such as Rufino Tamayo, “Torso de Mujuer,” lithograph ($1,5/2,500); Wayne Thiebaud, “Sorbet,” lithograph ($6/8,000); and Richard Diebenkorn, “Back View of Standing Woman with Striped Shirt,” hardground etching and scraping, ($5/7,000). This auction is rounded out with a variety of posters such as a Monterey Pop Festival handbill ($1/1,500) and a French advertising poster, Je Ne Fume Que Le Nil by Leonettto Cappiello, circa 1930 ($1,2/1,800).
