BEVERLY, MASS. — Kaminski Auctions’ April 1-2 auction will feature the partial contents of the estate of the late Richard B. Desmond of Folly Cove, Gloucester, Mass. The sale also features rare gold coins and an English Eighteenth/Nineteenth Century silver collection from Mr and Mrs Paul Bishop of Wakefield, Mass., with additions from other New England and Palm Beach, Fla. estates.
A featured lot from the Desmond estate is a mixed media painting titled “Inverse Segment” by the contemporary artist Cheryl Goldsleger whose work features at leading museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Fogg Museum, Israel Museum, Yale University and Rhode Island School of Design.
Another interesting painting in the sale is an oil on canvas, signed dated 1957 of Cubist figures by the Ecuadorian artist Eduardo Kingman.
American art features an oil on canvas of a Maine view with houses by Abbott Fuller Graves (American, 1859-1936), a Max Kuehne (1880-1968) work titled “Ruff Seas” and a Gunther Hartwick, Hudson River view.
Contemporary furniture highlights include a Gae Aulenti Basse Jumbo marble coffee table and a Roche Bobois round cocktail table with smoked glass.
Antique furniture features an Italian specimen marble top table with faux painted columns, an early Nineteenth Century French center table having an original marble top, signed L. Bellange, and an Eighteenth Century Louis XV marquetry two-drawer commode having an original rouge marble top, signed J.U. Erstet (Jean Ulrich). There is also a matching pair of Biedermeier corner cabinets, an antique Biedermeier dining table and a Ralph Lauren mahogany dining table labeled Henredon, along with a vintage Chesterfield brown tufted leather sofa.
Silver from the Desmond estate features two silver-footed salvers purchased from Shreve, Crump & Low, Boston, and Weiner’s Antiques across from the State House, Boston. The first is a salver from William Tirrell, London, 1783, having a family crest, and the second is a Chippendale salver from London, dated 1770, by John Carter with an engraved crest. There is also an Adams period, circa 1781, silver coffee urn from Henry Chawner, London, and a silver rococo tea caddy from S. Herbert & Co., London, circa 1764.
Asian items of interest include a pair of bronze cranes, modeled with raised beaks, standing 59 inches high. There is also a Chinese carved teak cabinet, circa 1835, consisting of shelves in a framework enclosed by an elaborately carved surround with pierced carved panels and a carved upper cornice extending around three sides. Both items are from the Richard B. Desmond, Folly Cove, estate.
Asian items from a Palm Beach estate include an ancient giltwood Buddha, standing 49 inches high, an antique Japanese Samurai suite with a hat measuring 72 inches high and a short sword with blade and tsuba, a Nineteenth Century Chinese rose medallion tall vase and an antique Chinese wood and bone carving of the six Immortals.
Other items of interest in the sale include an Alexander III of Macedon 336-325 BCE, gold stater, 8.8 grams, struck at the mint of Amphipolis. X.F., a scrimshaw decorated cribbage board by master carver Aloysius Pikonganna (1906-1986) of Nome, Alaska, and two South Sea pearl necklaces.
Kaminski will offer many antique carpets and a selection of Chinese porcelains as well in this auction.
Preview for the auction will be conducted Monday-Friday, March 27-31 from 10 am to 5 pm and Saturday and Sunday starting at 8 am. The preview is open while the auction is live.
