MARION, MASS. — On April 15, Marion Antique Auctions will offer 540 lots drawn from various local estates, collectors and institutions. This diverse sale begins with an assemblage of Fall River School still life paintings by Bryant Chapin, George Whitaker and E.C. Leavitt. From a South Dartmouth estate comes a collection of New Bedford area artists led by a dramatic seascape by C.H. Gifford, a landscape by Dwight Tyron titled “Early Morning Autumn” and a Robert Spear Dunning work titled “The Picnic” and depicting figures in a row boat. Deaccessioned by the New Bedford Whaling Museum is a seascape off the coast of Maine by R. Swain Gifford. Additionally, there is a Harry Neyland view of the old church on Cuttyhunk Island.
Also offered will be several marine paintings. The first is by William Pierce Stubbs of the ship Glide, as well as a large work by Charles Sidney Raleigh of the Belvedere, one of the last steam whalers. Other artists in the sale include Aldro Hibbard, Allen Whiting, Milton Avery, William Allen Wall, Louis Sylvia, Joseph Foxcroft Cole and Emma Levinia Swan.
Marine and folk art is led by a ship’s figurehead of a man from the whaleship Planter, circa 1818. The Planter made 13 whaling voyages out of Nantucket between 1818 and 1856. The figurehead was purchased on Nantucket by the grandmother of the consignor more than 100 years ago. A piece of history comes in the form of a Certificate of Membership to the Providence Marine Society, dated 1832. It is intricately engraved by William Hamlin and hand colored by Thomas Young. Another piece with a Nantucket whaling connection is a rare boxed dry compass signed on the dial Walter Folger Jr, an instrument and clock maker, astronomer, inventor, lawyer and congressman.
Among the scrimshaw, a polychrome walrus tusk depicting Jack Tar with a naval saber and a 13-star American flag is expected to do well. A whalebone two-tiered sewing stand and a coconut dipper with a carved eagle head handle are also standouts. These pieces as well as numerous other scrimshaw examples have come from a private South Dartmouth collector, many of which were purchased from Paul Madden antiques and Nina Hellman on Nantucket many years ago.
One of the highest value items in this sale is a cigar store Indian attributed to either Samuel Robb or Thomas Brooks. It has an old alligatored painted surface and carries an estimate of $20/30,000. Found in Norwalk, Conn., in 1920, this monumental piece has been in the consignor’s family until now.
An array of English, Irish and American silver will be offered. Of particular interest is a Tiffany ladle in the Olympia pattern, an Eighteenth Century Georgian silver basket by John Gorham, an Eighteenth Century silver can by Zachariah Brigden, two Irish silver coffee pots probably by George Hill. There are also sterling silver sets that include a Georg Jensen salad set in the Blossom pattern as well as a 202-piece Gorham flatware set in the Imperial Chrysanthemum pattern.
For lovers of miniature portraits, a selection of these works will be available. A particularly interesting lot includes the portraits of J.B. Banister and his wife, Sarah Ann, with an accompanying letter from husband to wife, dated 1840. In this letter, he recounts the sights he is seeing on his cruise of the Mediterranean while also inquiring on her wellbeing, what with the Boston smallpox outbreak, as the family was from the Boston area. There are also a number of late Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century miniatures, including one of the Queen Marie Antoinette. An interesting related painting, while not a miniature, is a large portrait of Daniel Webster, former secretary of state, who famously received an intimate portrait from famed miniaturist Sarah Goodrich.
There is a small selection of jewelry, which includes an 18K gold and enamel lady’s bracelet watch, 17 jewels. Swiss made; it comes with its original receipt from Tiffany & Co, dated Jan 31, 1913. From the same estate comes an Art Deco platinum and diamond brooch set with seven large brilliant white diamonds, approximately 20 points each. This sale features a collection of late Nineteenth to early Twentieth Century dolls, as well as a furnished dollhouse.
From a Florida estate comes a large Fiske cast iron fountain and a pair of Kramer classical cast iron garden urns, and an early bottle and flask collection. The midcentury category is represented by two pairs of Jean Pierre Bernard torch-cut steel cubes made for Harvey Prober, as well as a trio of limited edition Roy Lichtenstein prints. From the Larry Roberts collection of Taino stone objects are choice pieces of these ancient works of art, as well as Chinese export porcelain from the Taradash collection. Auction participants will also be graced with a selection of Nineteenth Century treenware, a rare Dedham pottery cat pattern plate and Nicolas Ortiz Casas Grandes pottery.
