The partial contents of many Hudson Valley estates and private collections include artwork from the estate of Walter Addison (Washington Depot, Conn., 1914-1981) — former lead artist of the Bronx Zoo 1940-50; Part 2 of a retired Millbrook, N.Y., author selling her country home and moving to smaller quarters; Part 3 of a Rochester, N.Y., collection consisting of Chinese export porcelains, unusual photographs including children with toys and early miniature portraits, including an Italian Renaissance portrait of a nun; Part 2 of the Barbara Becker estate, High Falls, N.Y., featuring country collectibles; antiques from the Mark Vail collection; sterling silver and coin silver from the historic VanKleek family, Dutchess County N.Y.; a large grouping of country collectibles from another High Falls, N.Y., estate; remaining collectibles from the Elliott and Nancy Steckel collection, formerly of Sharon, Conn., to include tools, pocket knives and early iron; other country and decorative collectibles gathered throughout the Hudson Valley.
Walter Addison was a prolific artist living on the banks of the Shepaug River in Washington, Conn. He studied at the National Academy of Design in New York City and was the lead staff artist at the New York Zoological Gardens (The Bronx Zoo). He painted a series of murals decorating several of the zoo’s animal houses as well as other private institutions. In 1950, he sculpted a series of large outdoor figures displayed at the International Exposition in Haiti. His work has been exhibited at the New York Aquarium consisting of deep sea creatures he created as seen by William Beebe in his bathysphere during his 1930s ocean dives. His work was also exhibited at the General Motors building at the 1964 World’s Fair, and his animal sculptures and paintings were often on display at Macy’s and other New York City department stores. Addison was the recipient of a Research Studio Fellowship, a Guggenheim Fellowship in sculpture and the Tiffany Sculpture Fellowship. His work was represented in many public and private collections, including those of Frank Lloyd Wright, Norman Rockwell and the famous Swedish sculptor Carl Milles.
The artwork from the Addison estate is well represented and will feature several pieces of his better framed wild animal artwork, many sketch books of animals, many watercolor and chalk sketches/studies of animals suitable for framing, most completed during his tenure at the Bronx Zoo, to be sold in large lots, a life-size sculpture of a Blue Heron plus other animal sculptures in terracotta and plaster (some with original plaster molds and maquettes), handmade and painted terracotta tiles, plates and bowls decorated with wild animals and many in Midcentury Modern designs. More than 75 lots of Addison works will be sold, many in large lots.
Other collectibles gathered throughout the Hudson Valley and Connecticut include duck decoys, game boards, architectural, folk art, quilts, coverlets, Oriental rugs, treenware, early lighting devices, country artwork, including an early portrait of a gentleman, country furniture, including a Pennsylvania Eighteenth Century corner cupboard, advertising and trade signs, including a hand painted Nineteenth/Twentieth Century tin sign in the form of a fish (fish market), stoneware, spongeware, Chinese export plates, vases and bowls, hammerhead shark mount and a large sailing warship ship model.
There are lots of sterling silver, including Tiffany, various sculptures, baskets, large grouping of ephemera and early photographs, Civil War collectibles, Coca-Cola cooler, a cover art illustration of a whimsical baseball team with batter at the plate signed Richard Hook from the Blue Book magazine issue dated April 1954, midcentury collectibles, including a Knolls marble top dining table, Oriental rugs, framed textiles, Lionel train sets, Keystone pressed steel mail plane and Nineteenth/Twentieth Century glass kugel collection — some with the original Macy’s store tags still attached.
