HUDSON, N.Y. — On April 29 at 10 am, Public Sale Auction House will conduct an auction titled “After Dark & Clean Lines.” This auction will offer more than 450 lots of Midcentury Modern furniture and accessories, and the second half of the auction will consist of 500 lots of original photography from the archive of Dance and After Dark Magazine.
The first half of the auction consists of the Midcentury Modern. It is highlighted by the 1960s and 1970s with some vibrant upholstered pieces by Jack Lenor Larsen. There is a large collection of Milo Baughman furniture. The manufacturer Mastercraft is abundant in the sale with credenzas and cabinetry. There are also several pieces from the Pace collection. There is no shortage of chairs, from Eames Shell chairs to Danish Modern dining chairs. A few individual highlights include a Vladimir Kagan-designed “tri-symmetric” coffee table and a Clifford Pascoe chest of drawers. The modern section of the auction is well rounded with lighting, rugs, artwork, furniture and more.
Public Sale will present the photography archive from editor William Como of Dance and After Dark magazine. After Dark magazine was an essential source on dance, theater, performance art, ballet and cinema of the late 1960s and 1970s and a foundational piece of gay cultural history that influenced a generation of artists. The publication was known for covers featuring iconic performers, singers, actors, bodybuilders and dancers of the day, and its pages were resplendent with staged photographs of individuals and groups posed in artful sittings with renowned photographers. This auction includes original photographic prints from Jack Mitchell, Kenn Duncan, Barbara Morgan, Bruce Weber, Victor Arimondi, Christopher Makos and Milton Oleaga, depicting subjects that include Warhol superstars Candy Darling, Yayoi Kusama, Joe D’Allesandro and companies like Dance Theater of Harlem and Martha Graham, all in black and white and often exhibiting the kind of intimacy that develops within a close-knit artistic community like the one After Dark helped to create.
Photos from the archive of Dance Magazine cover several dancers and dance companies with famous performances like Hair. There is personal correspondence between editor William Como and various photographers, many male nudes, as well as some rare and seldom-seen photographs of a young Arnold Schwarzenegger.
One of the most interesting photos of the sale is of Janis Joplin, referred to as the “lost Janis Joplin topless photo in Rio de Janeiro from the summer of 1970.” This is an original color photo, signed and identified by the photographer Ricky Ferreira, whom Joplin was staying with in Rio during the visit. Eight months later she passed away at the age of 27.
Public Sale’s auction will feature an earlier start time of 10 am on April 29 with an in-person preview April 22-29 from 10 am to 5 pm at 90 Green Street. For information, 518-966-7253 or www.publicsale.com.
