BRANFORD, CONN. — New England Auctions will present three estates on May 10 beginning at 10 am Eastern time. Previews for this sale will be one week in advance. This auction will have the options of live bidding as well as online bidding. A varied selection of Asian, American and European decorative objects will be featured, as well as paintings, sculpture, minerals and geodes and Chinese scholar stones. The owners of these rare and unusual items traveled the globe over many years to collect them.
Joseph Grusczak and William DeGraff were partners in life and in the architectural design firm, Grusczak Associates, where they curated interiors full of antiquities and art for clientele over the course of decades. Their incomparable taste and aesthetics for design was lauded in the business. Years of collecting culminated in their own home environment being extraordinary as well.
Vincent Longhi was a playwright living in New York City. Among his well-known works was the play Lincoln’s Mask. His private collection includes many artists, such as Karel Appel, and midcentury furniture.
Many great works of art will be available, including some by well-known artists, such as George Grosz, Karel Appel, Etienne Hajdu, Alexander Calder, Raphael Soyer, John Martin, Thomas Sully and Alphonse Mucha. Many signed bronze sculptures by such artists as Irenee Rochard, Botero, Lorenzo Ghiglieri and Felipe Kastenada will also be offered. A rare Ling-Shih scholar stone and Qing dynasty scholar stone are included along with other Asian pieces of porcelain, scrolls and screens. Among the more unusual offerings will be a collection of rare geodes, large quartz crystal clusters and obelisks, birds carved from lapis lazuli as well as unusual minerals and meteorites collected in different parts of the world. Some have a provenance from the well-known Yale scholar and professor of geology, Brian Skinner. Buyers will find sets of Royal Crown Derby, Rosenthal and Royal Bayreuth Bavaria dinnerware, signed engraved glass works by Mats Jonasson and a grouping of leaded glass lamps by such makers as Handel and Pairpoint.
From another local estate this auction will present three platters by Picasso, stamped “Madoura Picasso Edition.”
Among the special items featured will be an embroidered Chinese robe. In the realm of the unusual, collectors will find a surreal chessboard by Pierre Roy.
For the Midcentury Modern enthusiasts there will be a pair of Westport Adirondack chairs and four Norman Cherner chairs, as well as other pieces of furniture from that era. There are several Native American ollas and some significant African masks.
