PROVINCETOWN, MASS. — James R. Bakker Antiques will conduct its second spring live online fine arts auction on Saturday, May 20, starting at 1 pm. This auction features artworks from local estates and several prominent Provincetown and Cape Cod collectors.

Leading the sale is the historically significant 1913 painting, “Dunes, Provincetown,” by Houghton Cranford Smith, an early classroom monitor for Charles W. Hawthorne ($10/15,000). Also of historical significance are a rare color woodblock print, “A Salt Creek, Cape Cod,” by Margaret Patterson ($5/7,000) and “Rocks & Surf,” 1912, by Frederick Mulhaupt ($5/7,000).

Two white-line printing blocks by Agnes Weinrich are a timely offering, given the Museum of Fine Art’s show, “The Provincetown Printmakers,” currently on exhibition in Boston. Other important pieces from the early Provincetown Art Colony include “Setting Sun-Provincetown,” 1936, a watercolor by George Yater ($6/8,000), “Dunes at Peaked Hill” by Tod Lindenmuth ($1,5/2,000), a self-portrait by Gerrit Beneker, circa 1915 ($2/3,000) and “Bather,” a watercolor by John Whorf ($1,5/2,000).

Also included are three paintings by John Whorf’s daughter, Nancy, along with other works by historical Provincetown artists, including Evelin Bourne, Florence Brillinger, Arthur Cohen, Mary Hackett, Budd Hopkins, Karl Knaths, Dorothy Loeb, Michael Mazur, Helen Sawyer, Selina Trieff and Sol Wilson. Favorite contemporary artists Paul Bowen, John Dowd, Steve Kennedy, M.P. Landis and Anne Packard are also included in the upcoming sale.

A large selection of etchings, lithographs and woodblock prints by William Bicknell, Morgan Dennis, Albert Edel, John Gregory, Paul Resika, Harry Shokler and Donald Witherstine, among others, rounds out the auction with something for everyone.
