NEW YORK CITY — The American Art Fair celebrates its 16th year from May 13-16 at the elegant, landmarked Bohemian National Hall, 321 East 73rd Street. A destination for curators, collectors and the curious, the fair is known for presenting accessibly priced museum-quality works offered by 17 leading experts in Nineteenth and Twentieth Century American art.
Women artists, artists of color and overlooked or newly discovered artists are among the creators of the more than 300 works on view by the Hudson River School painters, American Impressionists, Tonalists, American Illustrators, the Ashcan School, American Modernists, American Abstractionists and Surrealists, and for the first time, American Folk Art.
Continuing as exhibitors are Alexandre Gallery, Avery Galleries, Bernard Goldberg Fine Arts LLC, D. Wigmore Fine Art, Debra Force Fine Art, Inc., Graham Shay 1857, Keny Galleries, Forum Gallery, Hirschl & Adler Galleries, Inc, Kraushaar Galleries, Questroyal Fine Art, LLC, Thomas Colville Fine Art, and returning after a pause, Vose Galleries. New to the fair are Addison Rowe Gallery, David A. Schorsch-Eileen M. Smiles, Dolan/Maxwell and Vallarino Fine Art.
Based in Santa Fe, N.M., Addison Rowe Gallery specializes in paintings and sculpture by historically significant American artists from the early Twentieth Century, especially the artists of the Santa Fe and Taos regions. Gallery director and owner Victoria Addison has 25 years active experience in the art business, beginning as a private art dealer in New York City. Several works by Emil Bisttram and Raymond Jonson are among those to be exhibited.
Expanding the fair’s range to include American folk art is the Woodbury, Conn., based firm David A. Schorsch-Eileen M. Smiles, one of the world’s leading authorities in the field. A special exhibition and catalog mark the firm’s fair debut: By The People, For the People, Fine American Folk Art 1780-1940. Highlights include works by Joshua Johnson, Bill Traylor, Asa Ames and Rufus Porter, as well as one of just six portraits of African American subjects painted by William Matthew Prior.
Dolan/Maxwell, based in Philadelphia, specializes in fine prints and works on paper by artists from the 1930s to the present, with an emphasis on Modernist works from the WPA era, the New York School and art by African Americans. As a founding member of the International Fine Print Dealers Association, Dolan/Maxwell has notable expertise and works on paper in all media.
Vallarino Fine Art just moved into a beautiful townhouse at 222 East 49th Street in New York City, perfect for exhibiting works of art in situ, allowing collectors to visualize works in their own apartments, homes and environments. With decades of experience specializing in postwar American abstract art, Vallarino also will show “Pool Hall” by Ernie Barnes, the first American professional athlete to become a noted painter.
Continuing the fair’s tradition, leading American Art specialists will present lectures during the fair.
The 16th American Art Fair will take place Saturday-Tuesday, May 13-16, at the Bohemian National Hall, 321 East 73rd Street. Fair hours are from noon to 6 pm, Saturday-Monday; and noon to 5 pm on Tuesday. Admission to the fair and lectures is complimentary; lecture seating is on a first-come basis.
