NEW YORK CITY — Highlights of Auctions at Showplace’s upcoming May 21 sale include fine art by Joseph Zaritsky, Giuseppe Santomaso, Moshe Gershuni, Franz Kline, Marc Chagall, Ilya Repin, Albert Andre, Georges Lemmen, Clementine Hunter, Zelig Segal, Salvador Dali and Roy Lichtenstein. Furniture by George Nakashima, Vladimir Kagan, Karl Springer and Warren Platner, as well as lighting by Tiffany Studios, Maison Bagues, Fortuny and Isamu Noguchi continue the sale. As for jewelry, there are pieces by FRED Paris, Gianni Versace, Marilyn Cooperman and Patek Philippe on offer. Many more pieces of fine and decorative arts, including works by Tiffany and Buccelatti complete the sale.
Fine art highlights open with a 1962 untitled oil on paper mounted to canvas by the Italian painter Giuseppe Santomaso. The piece depicts a polychrome Abstract Expressionist composition and has a Galleria Pogliani label to verso. Santomaso’s work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art and the La Biennale di Venezia, Venice.
May 21 at Showplace features an extensive collection of modern Israeli art headlined by a 1968 abstract oil on canvas by Ukrainian/Israeli artist Joseph Zaritsky. The colorful abstraction in red and blue hues was a part of the Zaritsky Retrospective exhibited at the Tel Aviv Museum from November 13, 1984 through March 20, 1985. The sale also includes works by Moshe Gershuni, Yehiel Shemi, Nurit David, Azriel Zelig Segal and Ilana Goor.
Also of note is a Luis Tomasello Atmosphere Chromoplastique assemblage sculpture, modern mixed media three-dimensional Op Art kinetic painting, oil on wood mounted on Masonite.
Paintings ranging in styles by LeRoy Neiman, a folk art scene by Clementine Hunter, a contemporary portrait of Ryan Gosling by James Franco, a landscape by Petr Pavlovich Ossovsky, a New Realist piece by Zhao Bo and an antique Victorian winter scene by Samuel Sidley round out painting highlights.
Prints and multiples on offer include “A Sequestered Garden” by Marc Chagall, lithograph, “Cosmic Rays Resuscitating Soft Watches” by Salvador Dali, “Mirror” by Roy Lichtenstein, along with additional works by Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse.
A collection of fine art glass vases by Louis Comfort Tiffany, Zsolnay Pecs and Dale Patrick Chihuly are also on offer May 21. The highlight of the collection is a rare Tiffany Studios blue Daffodil Art Nouveau table lamp designed by Clara Driscoll who headed the Women’s Glass Cutting Department, which grew to a team of 35 women later referred to as the “Tiffany Girls.”
Silver offerings open with a stunning Gianmaria Buccellati silver and malachite centerpiece, in the form of a cornucopia issuing harvest fruits, the whole with leaves, grape clusters, pears, apples, pomegranates, figs, lemons and strawberries with wheat sheaves, issuing from a large polished malachite mineral specimen stone. Building on the iconic Buccellati leaf jewelry and silver pieces, elaborate baskets of flowers and fruits were conceived and retailed by the firm, as well as animal and sea figures. Also on offer is a seven piece tea and coffee service by William B. Durgin circa 1900 in the Gilded Age Regence Revival taste. A C.J. Vandder flatware set in the Onslow pattern, a Russian silver centerpiece from 1838 by Jacob Wiberg and a Carlo Mario Camusso .800 silver shell form wine cooler or centerpiece are just some of the pieces in the section, which is completed with additional works by Tiffany & Co and others.
Auctions at Showplace often include fine jewelry, luxury goods and designer costume jewelry; the May 21 sale is no exception. Of note is an Hermès Kelly bag designed by Jean-Louis Robert Frederic Dumas with original mini padlock and keys. A FRED Paris 18K white gold necklace designed as graduated star links, featuring seven stars adorned with pave set round brilliant cut diamonds, weighing a total of approximately 3.06 carats. Also of note is a Gianni Versace 18K yellow gold bracelet in a polished satin finish decorated with applied black enamel, featuring the Versace logo on each link and on each charm.
