NEW YORK CITY — Art for Eternity, one of the last remaining brick and mortar ancient and ethnographic art galleries in New York City, is presenting its very first online-only auction through the LiveAuctioneers platform on June 17, with no live bidding. The firm has been a private dealer in Manhattan for more than 30 years and has established a large clientele from whom it sources objects to bring to the marketplace. These are presented with minimum bids, conservative estimates and no hidden reserves. “As certified appraisers based on the Upper East Side of Manhattan we are continually exposed to old collections in New York City, which, in our opinion, is the densest repository of quality art in the world,” said Howard Nowes, director.
More than 200 lots will be offered, including ancient Egyptian, Asian, tribal and pre-Columbian art, books, coins and catalogs.
A painted wood ancient Egyptian wood funerary stele belonging to Hepetamun, with colorful vignettes, hieroglyphic inscription and provenance will be offered ($40/60,000). The rare, well-sized ancient Egyptian wood funerary stele with documentation from M.R. Sabatier was sold through Drouot Paris in 1890. “In this piece you can see the magic of ancient Egypt. It’s so well preserved — it looks like it could have been drawn yesterday, despite being more than 2,000 years old,” said Nowes. “It’s a piece fitting for a serious collector or an institution, because of its beauty, rarity and stellar provenance.” Pieces from the Sabatier collection reside at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and at the British Museum, which has in its collection a similar piece, also inscribed for Hepetamun.
Another choice piece is an Apulian red figured bell krater, which illustrates the Greek mastery of kiln oxidation and reduction, a complex ancient technique for firing ceramics that results in the dramatic graphic representations we see today. This piece, published in the first supplement to the Red Figured Vases of Apulia by Arthur Dale Trendall, is a fine example of the type. “Trendall quite literally wrote the book on South Italian vases, and this piece is documented in one of the many supplements to the Bible,” Nowes said. “It’s a rare opportunity for collectors to acquire a well-documented antiquity in today’s increasingly provenance driven marketplace” ($7/12,000).
From the Old World to the New, the sale offers a large and finely painted Zacatacas pottery seated female effigy figure from the shaft tomb culture of ancient west Mexico. “Zacatecas are unlike anything else from the pre-Columbian world. Some believe their style was influenced by space aliens,” Nowes said. Abstract, almost Modernist, this piece has an estimate of $6/12,000.
Also offered is a smaller collection of Asian antiques and antiquities, including a unique “trick teapot” from the Ralph Chait Gallery. This curious teapot, known as a “Cadogan,” is undated, but may be from the Kangxi period ($500-$1000). These novelty teapots first originated in China, and when standing upright, appear to have no entry point, and thus no way to be filled, yet have a spout from which contents are poured. “This is an unusual and playful piece — we rarely see these on the marketplace,” Nowes said. “It has a deep, rich aubergine color, and is in wonderful condition.”
The sale includes pieces from a wide variety of estates from New York City and beyond, including those of Dr Henry Cherrick, Saul Tuttman, Daryl Kulok, Stanley Kaufman and Dr Otto Fischer, to name a few.
Art for Eternity Gallery is located at 303 East 81st Street, just a few blocks from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Viewings will be conducted June 6-16 and by appointment. For information, 917-414-8695 or email eternityancientart@gmail.com.
