PHILADELPHIA — In back-to-back sales of fine art, ceramics, furniture and design this July, Freeman’s presents European Week, bringing art and objects from across the continent to market.
“The depth and breadth of the week’s sales are impressive, with more than five centuries of material coming to market,” said Fraser Niven, Freeman’s chief executive officer. “We’re particularly honored to once again present the Rubin collection of Wedgwood ceramics, a single-owner selection sure to elicit strong buyer interest.”
With works by highly sought-after names and houses — from Carl Moll, Camille Corot and Rembrandt to Josiah Wedgwood, William De Morgan and Minton — the sales in Freeman’s European Week offer artworks and objects for collectors across categories.
The July 12 sale presents the second installation of the Wedgwood collection of Ellis and Suzanne Rubin, featuring a selection of nearly 150 lots — styles from Black Basalt and Fairyland Lustre to Queensware, Jasperware and Agateware. With works from the Eighteenth to Twenty-First Centuries on offer, all the variety and perfection is led by two quintessential 1920s Fairyland Lustre pieces designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones.
Highlighting the eclectic design sensibilities of early Twentieth Century American collectors, The Tastemaker brings together porcelain and ceramics, Persian rugs, European-made furniture, French and Spanish painting and gilt-bronze mounted objects and glass works by Edward F. Caldwell & Co. and Tiffany Studios. The July 13 auction is led by a George II carved walnut side table (circa 1750) and an ancient Egyptian sarcophagus front (circa Late Period, 664-332 BCE) and includes additional highlights from Frank Furness, Antoine-Louis Barye, Meissen and more.
Freeman’s July 18 European art and Old Masters auction is led by “Venedig, Zattere,” an oil by the Viennese painter Carl Moll, an artist whose $4.75 million world auction record Freeman’s has held since 2021. The sale features a selection of paintings, sculptures, etchings and drawings from the Sixteenth to early Twentieth Centuries, including several etchings by renowned Dutch master Rembrandt and important Italian masterworks from Giovanni Martelli and the Studio of Sebastiano del Piombo. Collectors of European painting will find several Nineteenth Century works by French Academic and Impressionist masters Émile Munier, Camille Corot and Gustave Loiseau.
Freeman’s is at 2400 Market Street. For further information, 215-563-9275 or www.freemansauction.com.
