MEDWAY, MASS. — Coyle’s Auction will offer a two-session antiques and estates auction on Tuesday, June 27. The auction will include an eclectic mix of furniture, artwork, porcelain, sterling silver, jewelry and much more drawn from Milton, Belmont, Beacon Hill, Fitchburg and a large Worcester home, as well as items from a religious institution together with selected additions. Hundreds of fresh-to-the-market offerings will be offered with no reserves.
Session 1 begins at 2:30 pm and will feature the private collection of vintage postcards, stereoview cards, photography, trade cards and greeting cards from the collection of the late Stuart “Bob” McDermott of Fitchburg, Mass. McDermott was an avid longtime collector and member of the local postcard club. The collection includes several albums totaling well over 5,000 postcards with many of his personal favorites. One album of note has approximately 125 images of “ultra” beautiful women as he noted on it, mostly French tinted examples, etc. Another interesting album contains early 1900s postcards, including English actresses such as Gabrielle Ray, Marie Studholme, Edna May and other postcards of women (approximately 450 in album) by various publishers.
There are also nine albums of Bamforth & Co, both in color and photo black and white series, including a two-volume album of more than 450 color series cards in alphabetical order. In addition, there are hundreds of additional Bamforth cards not in albums. Pin-up girls, nudes, arcades and suggestive poses are represented in an album with approximately 190 cards with some Mutoscope cards by Earl Moran and Zoe Mozert. Another album of approximately 160 color cards that will be offered are published by Ullman. Other albums and multiple boxes of postcards, including Rally Day, religious, motto, character, cartoon, locations, etc., will cross the block There are several large lots of antique trade cards, greeting cards, holiday cards and more.
In addition to the postcards there is a collection of more than 600 stereoview cards with a group of approximately 90 with views of Fitchburg and Mount Wachusett, many by J.C. Moulton, etc. In addition, there is another large group of central Massachusetts stereoview cards. Rounding out the stereo cards are hundreds of various cards in black and white as well as in color of varying subjects, including comical series, etc. Photography lots will include many CDV, cabinet cards, tintypes, etc. In addition, large lots of various types of ephemera will also be offered.
The Session 2 estates auction begins at 5 pm. Furniture offerings will feature several pieces of midcentury examples, some with original sales slips from Herman Miller bought in 1950s and 1960s in New York. A dining set with table and six chairs, bar cart, sofa, Noguchi glass top coffee table, Dux sideboard, George Nelson for H. Miller chests and end tables, six leather modern KFF dining chairs and more will be offered. In addition to the Midcentury Modern, an unusual Eighteenth Century bowfront chest with exotic wood inlays, oak J.P. Seeburg Piano Co. Chicago Nickelodeon, an unusual shoe shine chair by Clifford & Co, Boston, several pieces of antique carved furniture, including cassone, desks, chairs, etc. and antique American furniture will be sold.
Estate accessories and artwork in the sale include a pair of gilt bronze and marble candlesticks, a pair of antique Rose Medallion garden seats, musical bird in cage, W.R. Sayles ‘75 Nantucket basket purse with carved whale, gold jewelry, sterling silver, porcelain, several antique portraits, including Samuel Burtis Baker, modern art painting by Derrick Harris and other artwork and accessories.
