RED HOOK, N.Y. — The July 15 sale by George Cole Auctions will feature merchandise from the estate of Clark Murray of Rhinebeck, N.Y. It is the entire estate with very few additions from a Westchester estate, all to be sold to the highest bidder.

Murray was known for his large outdoor constructions of welded and painted steel pipes. A sculptor who was considered one of the pioneers of minimalism in California then moved to New York City in the 1960s when minimalism was at its height.

One of his sculptures is titled “White Mountain” and weighs three tons.

George Cole will offer the estate’s entire contents, Part 1, for public auction on Saturday, July 15, at 4 pm in-person and online through BidSquare and LiveAuctioneers.

The contents include early portraits dating to 1747-56 of Willing family, important names in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

There is also service for 40 in Chinese export, 101 pieces, including 10 graduated size platters, one dated 1847. Also offered will be various armoires in all sizes. Artwork includes Olin Dows, Eighteenth Century portraits, an encaustic by Ronald Chase, an abstract by Harold Cohen, Nineteenth Century landscapes, early religious paintings on panels, Eighteenth Century watercolors, 127 dinner plates and 27 soups in Spode.

It being a complete estate sale, Murray had a Ducati Monster motorcycle he was riding when he was in his late 80s. “We learned that he loved sailing and sailed many times across the Atlantic,” said George Cole. “He built his own sailboat, which is also in the sale, as well as his Jeep Wrangler.

Although this is a brief listing, a lot of Murray’s possessions were passed down through his family and his wife’s family, related to the Astors.
