CLINTONDALE, N.Y. — Kensington Estate Auction’s Monday, July 17, online auction will exhibit the passion of some of America’s great photographers. Through signed photographs, books and personal letters, the photographers represented in this auction span decades. The auction will also include fine art and urban art; Eskimo and Pacific Northwest ethnography; hand-colored pochoirs; sculptures; Persian rugs; stamp collections; Art Deco French posters; botanical illustrations; and more
Historic images of Noel Coward and Gertrude Lawrence from the Vandam Studio; Cecil Beaton capturing Carole Lombard shot by Otto Dyar; on set at the Paramount Studio is a relaxing image of the director Josef von Sternberg with Marlene Dietrich; and glass slides of Gypsy Rose reflect Hollywood’s Golden Era. Capturing the Jazz Age, William Gottlieb’s images of Ella Fitzgerald and Dizzy Gillespie depict their essence. Iconic photographers, signed images, personal letters and books bring the photography section into contemporary times. Quintessential photographs of Washington DC by night by Kurt Wentzel are available.
Rounding out this section are signed images, books, personal letters and posters from Richard Avedon and Hiro (Yasuhiro Wakabayashi). Working across genres, encompassing portrait, news and fashion photography, both Avedon and Hiro changed the vision of photography. The interest in this category extends to a candid photo of Andy Warhol and friends, Stephen Sondheim, George Hoyningen-Huene, Frank Yamrus and others. Not to be overlooked are the photo negatives of Tzar Nicholas of Russia, Howard Carter dining in Tutankhamun’s Tomb, photographic negative of Man Ray’s Kiki de Montparnasse’s head next to an African ceremonial mask and publicity images and candid photo negatives of influential ballet stars: Vaslav Nijinsky, Anna Pavlova and Isadora Duncan. What may be of particular interest is the collection of 1925 glass slides of Paris, Henri Cartier-Bresson’s The Decisive Moment (1952) and a signed photo album of J.H. Lartigue, Boyhood Photos.
The Eighteenth Century hand-colored botanical engravings by Dr Robert Thornton exhibit vivid coloring and extraordinary detail. A vast array of Leon Bakst pochoir costume designs, Diaghilev Ballets Russes original souvenir programs, line cut plates of Jean Cocteau and Art Deco works of Paul Colin will be in high demand.
The ethnographic category is replete with Pacific Northwest Coast lithographs, signed masks, totem and Inuit soapstone sculpture. In addition is a signed Alebrije wood carving by Jacobo and Maria Angeles. Bali is represented by a mythical Barong Ket carved sculpture and Kamasan Palintangan astrological calendar.
Art categories include works from the Eighteenth Century, Midcentury Modern, illustration art, lithographs, urban/graffiti art and posters. A timeless Grand Tour painting of a maiden on wood panel and several antique portrait oil paintings take us back in time. Bringing us forward are paintings by Robert Mueller, Aaron Berkman, Helen Berggruen, James Carlin and Sol Wilson, to name a few. Inspiring our imaginations is the illustration art represented. Of note is the original Readers Digest cover art by the noteworthy sporting and wildlife artist Roy Mason (1952) and National Geographic published illustrations from the scientific and sci-fi book illustrator Davis Meltzer.
Timeless lithographs include art from Henri-Gabriel Ibels, Ottokar Mascha, A.M. Cassandre and Natalia Gontcharov . Several significant posters will be offered; from the famous graphic designer Jean Carlu is the Emprunt National, circa 1930s; Paul Colin’s Electric of France, circa 1951; original theater poster, banner poster, theater card and newspaper signed by the star of Sweet Charity Gwen Verdon; and an original 1968 film poster Riot. Urban/Graffiti art is exemplified by the paintings and sculpture from LA II (Angel Ortiz).
Leading a sculpture grouping is an intricately designed, signed bronze gorilla; signed Inuit soapstone sculpture; abstract metal sculpture on marble; Nineteenth Century forest devil brass inkwell, Dabbert Studio porcelain pedestal sculpture, to name a few.
For stamp collectors interest is vast number of worldwide stamps, mint and cancelled stamps, blocks, stamped postage envelopes several with letters, coronation memorabilia and stamp albums. Collectors of American postals will be interested in stamped envelopes (many with correspondence), stamped post cards, individual mint and cancelled stamps from 1880 to 1902.
Unique, specialty items include Sotheby’s sale catalogs, admittance tickets and addendums from the 1996 sale of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis; antique Peruvian-Spanish Colonial silver baptism holy water font; signed King Louis XVIII military document, including the wax seal; Guillermo del Toro x Patron Tequilla altar box, with book insert and a Russian Nineteenth Century parcel gilt snuff box depicting the monument of Peter the Great.
