NEW YORK CITY — La Belle Epoque Auction House, is presenting “The Sizzling Summer” August 19 live auction. The auction, being conducted in-person, begins at 11 am and will also be online. Online previews and early bidding begin on August 7, with in-person previews August 17-18 from 11 am to 5 pm.
Leading the way will be an eclectic selection of contemporary and Modern art of all kinds, while also offering a collection of antiques, silver, midcentury modern furniture, jewelry, fashion, lighting, memorabilia, collectibles, decorative items and more.
Highlights in the art arena will include a rare complete Norman Rockwell “Tom Sawyer” suite, 1973, presented in the original portfolio. Included in the lot is one lithograph (made with 12 plates) printed at Atelier Mourlot in Paris, and seven collotypes printed by Arthur Jaffe Heliochrome Co., Vienna, Austria. Numbered 30/200 bottom right of each sheet. Hand signed bottom right of each sheet by the artist in Stockbridge, Mass. ($4/6,000).
Other notable art is a still life by Tom Wesselmann (1931-2004). This 1988 canvas depicts a bowl of fruit surrounded by flowers and a tea kettle. The brilliant colors of this Wesselmann exhibit sharp contrasts with the stark white background. Hand signed by Wesselmann in pencil and numbered 80/100 ($8/12,000). A Reclining Figure/Indian Blanket by Alex Katz, circa 1987 ($6/8,000) and a framed Joan Miro (1893-1983) “Galerie Matarasso” lithograph circa 1957 ($3/5,000) are included.
Another Miro is the framed “Blue Maze,” circa 1956, hand-signed lithograph executed for Jacques Prevert in 1956, printed by Mourlot and published in Paris by Maeght ($800-$1,000), while a unique Lorenzo Quinn (b 1966) “Trust” bronze sculpture on marble base, marked 773/999 – US. Quinn grew up in the United States and Italy working most notably for the United Nations in New York as well as the Vatican. Quinn was commissioned to create a sculpture on the occasion of the Eighth Centenary of the death of Saint Anthony (patron saint of travelers) ($2/3,000). Also offered will be a framed Alfred Steglitz “The Flatiron” photogravure from Camera Work IV, circa 1903, Plate 1 ($1,5/2500).
Decorative items will also have a showing, including a Waylande Gregory “Mermaid” vase, circa 1940s, the glazed ceramic signed and measuring 15 by 10 inches ($1,5/2,000).
Jewelry and fashion will also be represented with a Christian Dior couture crystal necklace, purchased directly from the Christian Dior 2001 Runway Collection in its original box ($500/800), and a vintage Louis Vuitton duffel ($600/900).
Asian art being offered are a Hiroshige Ando (1797-1858) “Hiratsuka” woodblock print depicting one of 53 stations on Tokaido Road (from Tokyo to Kyoto). Printed in 1855, it is estimated $1,5/1,800, and a ukiyo-e Kabuki Japanese woodblock print in the style of Fusatane, Edo period, Nineteenth Century, has an $800-$1,200 estimate.
