PLAINVILLE, CONN. — On Monday, July 24, in a live auction starting at 5:30 pm, Winter Associates will offer items from homes in Vermont, Rhode Island and Connecticut with a wide selection of Continental objects, Sixteenth–Twentieth Century artwork, furnishings and an assortment of memorabilia.
Finely executed examples of enamel work, some gold and silver, are from a New England estate and are wonderful examples of skill. A pair of 15-inch-high Russian chalices executed in silver and cloisonné are unusual for their size and form and are accompanied by a jeweled egg, beaker on stand, etc., as well as a pair of 14K Faberge-style guilloche enamel desk frames and other guilloche pieces. Other enamels include a selection from Nineteenth Century Vienna, including a ship on a pedestal, ebonized jewelry casket, unusual silver oval dish, perfume casket, miniature corner cabinet, etc. Galle glass, French boulle, and ormulu, as well as Italian micromosaics and pietra dura round out the Continental selection.
An Edgar Negret sculpture, “Reloj,” a twisting cube shaped aluminum form with red finish, is one of the Twentieth Century works of art to be offered and is accompanied by a hand-signed certificate by the artist. Negret is unequivocally the pioneer of modern sculpture in Columbia and known for his abstract metal sculptures of which this work is a good example. A recipient of the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Scholarship (1975) and Grand Prix of Sculpture XXXIV Venice Biennial (1968), his work continues to be an outstanding example of Geometric Abstraction. For traditionalists, two Albrecht Durer (German, 1471-1528) original woodcuts “The Hermits St Paul and St Anthony” and “Saints Nicholas, Ulrich and Erasmus,” date from 1504 to 1508, and have some collector’s stamps verso.
Tiger maple is a favorite choice of many furniture makers as it draws the eye to its unpredictable stripes. Such wood is an aberration in nature that occurs in less than five percent of maples and is sought after by collectors of all periods. Two Eldred Wheeler case pieces, a bonnet top secretary desk and a six-drawer huntboard will be offered, as well as a figured maple tall case clock. Other reproductions include a D.R. Dimes Windsor settee in a painted black finish and a Margolis Queen Anne-style chest on stand.
From an estate in Avon, Conn., come collections of presidential autographed books, coins, pens, baseball and other sports memorabilia. Items of special interest include fountain and ballpoint pens by Cartier, Montblanc, Aurora, etc., with tips in 12K, 14K and 18K; Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle autographed baseballs; and a Duke Snider autographed Brooklyn Dodgers baseball cap.
From this and other estates are also a 1922 World Series Game 2 ticket, football and basketball cards.
This sale will be live at the Plainville gallery at 21 Cooke Street. Winter Associates’ auction catalog is available online at www.auctionsappraisers.com as of Friday, July 14. Previews are Friday, July 21, from noon to 4 pm; Sunday, July 23, from 2 to 4 pm; and on Monday, July 24, noon to 5 pm. Previewers are welcome at other times by appointment.
