PROVINCETOWN, MASS. — James R. Bakker Antiques will conduct its summer live online fine arts auction on Saturday, August 5, starting at 1 pm. The auction features artworks from local estates and several prominent Provincetown and Cape Cod collectors and includes a selection of both historic and contemporary artists. Leading the sale are several significant historical pieces from the estate of Lucy and William L’Engle, including “Cement Workers,” a 1926 watercolor by William ($1,5/2,500) and “Picassoesque,” a large oil by Lucy painted circa 1919 ($20/30,000). “Maternal Love,” an oil attributed to Charles W. Hawthorne ($15/20,000), is just one piece coming from the early Provincetown art colony. An example of a highly coveted “mudhead,” “Painters on the Beach,” possibly depicting both Charles and Marion Hawthorne at their easels, will be a treasure for the highest bidder.
Nationally known mid to late Twentieth Century Provincetown artists are well represented in the auction, including Peter Busa’s 1946 acrylic, “Two Horses” ($12/16,000) a large collage by Leo Manso, untitled (I) ($2/4,000), a 1964 ink abstract by Budd Hopkins ($2/4,000) and “Nudes on the Beach,” a 1980s work by Paul Resika ($1,5/2,000).
Several rare white-line woodblock prints (known as the Provincetown Print as seen at the current exhibition at the MFA, Boston), are available, including an early Agnes Weinrich (with the original printing block, $3/5,000) and prints by Mary Mullineux, Angele Myrer and Ferol Warthen. The remarkable 1914 linocut, “Mountain Stream,” by William Zorach ($2/4,000) is one of the earliest dated pieces of this sale.
The auction has a wide selection of contemporary artists, including well-established and highly collectible Provincetown artists Anne Packard, John Dowd, T.J. Walton and others.
Two iconic Boston scenes, “The Ritz Carlton” by Vince Castellanet ($1/1,500) and 1950s “Hatch Shell” by in-demand artist Mary Hackett ($4/6,000), round out the sale with its wide variety of subjects, mediums and values. For additional information, www.bakkerproject.com or 508-413-9758.
