BEDFORD, N.Y. — A presentation of art and jewelry highlights Butterscotch Auction Gallery’s fall estates auction, which will take place on November 19 at 608 Old Post Road.
The auction begins with notable works of art from local estates and collections, including an Impressionist street scene painted by Abel George Warshawsky (1883-1962), fresh to market after descending through the family of Daniel O’Day of Standard Oil. Other notable artworks include a pastel on brown paper by Italian artist Piero Dorazio (1927-2005) and an abstract sculpture of lapis marble in two parts by Andrea Cascella (1920-1990), from a Westport, Conn., estate. Important posters are also presented, including one from the Palace Hotel in St Moritz in Switzerland and a massive, framed advertisement of Sutro Baths from 1896. Contemporary art highlights from the sale include two mixed media prints by American artist Frank Stella (b 1936), and five works by abstract artist Robert Natkin (American, 1930-2010).
The auction continues with more than 100 lots of fine estate jewelry and silver from local collections, including a selection of 18K gold jewelry from a single-owner collection of Van Cleef & Arpels, comprising rings, bracelets, earrings and brooches. Timepieces will also be featured, including a rare Thomas Tompion cased verge pocket watch, circa 1695, descended through a South Salem family, a 14K white gold Gruen “The Pentagon” pocket watch, an 18K Patek Philippe hunter-case watch and an Omega Speedmaster professional wristwatch. An armorial French silver centerpiece, circa 1900, weighing 127 troy ounces, will entice sterling buyers.
A lifelong collection of Chinese porcelain and earthenware from the Song through Qing dynasties will cross the auction block, including an Eighteenth Century Chinese copper-red glazed meiping vase, a Chinese Dehua porcelain gu vase from the Kangxi period (1662-1722) and a rare Chinese imitation “bronze” porcelain censer from the same period.
Additionally, several lots of early Americana will go up for bid, including a 1778 tavern sign from the Old Taft Tavern in Uxbridge, Mass., where George Washington was an overnight guest in 1789, plus period weathervanes, including a Nineteenth Century full-bodied running horse and another patinated running horse removed from an historic homestead in Bedford, as well as early Nineteenth Century American folk art portrait paintings.
Butterscotch’s fall sale will also feature works by artists, including Walter Ellison, Paul Gottlieb Weber, Mort Kunstler, Louise Nevelson and Alan Houser. Hundreds of additional items sourced from New York-area estates will cross the block, including a collection of porcelain from a Greenwich, Conn., woman that will excite ceramic bidders, as well as fine art, decorative arts, Asian arts, African art, jewelry, furniture and more.
The live auction will commence at 10:30 am Eastern time, with bidding available by phone, absentee and online. The auction will take place at 608 Old Post Road, with preview for selected items on Saturday, November 18, from 11 am to 5 pm. For additional information, www.butterscotchauction.com.
