WOODBURY, CONN. — On Tuesday, August 22, Schwenke Auctioneers will offer more than 500 lots for several estates and collections from New York and Connecticut. The sale features more than 150 lots from a New York state collection, comprising American fine art, American formal and country furniture, American folk art, Continental and English furniture and decorations, plus many other estates and collections, including more than 50 lots of country Americana and European fine art from the estate of John “Jay” St Mark, Newtown, Conn.
American fine art from the New York state collection includes a Jasper Cropsey watercolor on paper, Hudson River view of sailboats and dock in river, dated 1819 and signed lower left. Also from the same collection are a Ralph Blakelock oil on canvas of a Native American encampment and a George W. King large oil on canvas Adirondack landscape with grist mill and cattle in stream. King was born and lived in Auburn, N.Y., working also in Utica, N.Y. King became a friend of John Muir and William Keith and sketched with them in the Sierra Nevada in 1871-73.
Fine art from Connecticut estates includes an Alphonse Mucha Art Nouveau promotional poster done for Leslie Carter for her role in Kassa; a Picasso etching “Le Repos du Sculpteur,” pencil signed in margin and dated 1933 in the plate; a Salvador Dali signed etching “Place des Vosges,” pencil signed with “EA” (Artist’s Proof), signed and dated 1958 in the plate; a Georges de Feure (1868-1943). Paris-Almanach poster; and a signed Yaacov Agam (b 1928) framed op-art work.
The sale includes an additional 12 lots of paintings from the estate of Eugene F. Savage, noted American muralist who lived the later part of his life in Woodbury, Conn. Each current lot contains numerous smaller works on paper from the estate collection.
Items from one New York City collector include an Edward Moran (American, 1829-1901) oil on tin, signed lower left “Ed. Moran,” luminist work of fishing boats in New York harbor with legend verso “Bay of New York at Sunrise 1875.”
Several lots of sterling silver are being sold, including a rare Toronto, Canada, cased sterling silver flatware service for 12 in the Stratford pattern, made by Roden Bros. The service has weighable silver of 195.25 troy ounces.
Several lots of jewelry are being offered for a Litchfield County estate, including an 18K gold mesh/braided bracelet; a group of seven 18K gold Italian bangle bracelets; a heavy 18K gold braided necklace, signed 18; and a 14K gold Omega Constellation for Tiffany watch.
Items from another Litchfield County collector include an Eighteenth Century English Regency inlaid mahogany sofa table with a writing board in the center drawer, with two flanking small drawers.
American furniture from a Dutchess County estate includes a New York inlaid mahogany tall case clock and a Nineteenth Century Massachusetts inlaid lady’s tambour secretary desk. The desk is in two parts, base with drop panel and turned legs with ball feet.
Also from yet another Litchfield County collector is a group of Midcentury Modern art glass, including Venini examples, Seguso glass and Venetian works, as well as a Bernard Langlais (American, 1921-1977) wood “assemblage” sculpture of a woolly sheep, signed bottom edge; and a Meso Vera Cruz-style ceremonial stone ballgame yoke, apparently granite with traces of red pigment, ornamented with carved Quetzalcoatl feathered serpent deity design.
The sale ends with several lots of estate Oriental carpets, including Persian, Caucasian and Turkoman room and scatter sized rugs, and other regional and modern rugs of varying sizes. Most notable among the carpets and related textiles are a large Chinese Art Deco garden panel carpet from a New York City West Side estate, with unusual multiple field medallions and corner shields, 22 feet 1 inch long by 12 feet ½ inch wide, and a Caucasian area rug from a New York City collector.
