MIDDLEBRO, MASS. — White’s Auctions will offer a mix of pieces for collectors and dealers alike on Sunday, September 24, at 11 am. This auction includes several paintings and bronzes, a collection of gold and silver coins, a large selection of Oriental rugs of various ages, patterns and sizes to include 10 room-size or larger pieces, a collection of Native American artifacts, sterling silver and jewelry, clocks, lamps, pottery, porcelain and furniture and more.
This 450-plus-lot sale will feature paintings and bronzes descended through the family of noted collector Sir Leon Bagrit (1902-1979), a prominent British industrialist and pioneer of automation. First up is a large oil on canvas French beach scene by Eugene Boudin (1824-1898) with original gallery label of Arthur Tooth and Sons, London, which can be found on other paintings by Boudin. A Dutch Old Master oil on panel by Godfried Van Schalcken (1643-1706) is a portrait of a woman looking in her mirror, bearing a faint signature and date within the image. French bronzes from this collection include “Amphitrite,” 20 inches tall, after Michel Anguier (1612-1686), a possible “Venus” bathing, with classical draped female with torch, classical maiden or goddess female holding a cornucopia, perhaps a goddess of fortune, gilded bronze Neptune type figure with a horn and riding a dolphin. From a Medfield, Mass., estate comes a large painting by George Innes (1835-1894) titled “Old Medfield Homestead” and a smaller George Innes painting, “Twilight.” A signature image painting of a front doorway with flowering bush by Massachusetts and Maine artist Abbott Graves (1859-1936) and a Melbourne Havelock Hardwick (1857-1916) winter scene with a Carrig-Rohane frame, will be offered. A William Morris Hunt (1824-1979) Niagara Falls oil on canvas and an additional painting purchased from the artist is a large rare canvas abstract by a noted Indian abstract artist, signed on reverse ’04 Ram Kumar (Indian, 1924-2018).
Coins amount to more than 80 lots of silver and gold coins from two large early lifetime collections. Featured are circulated and uncirculated coin lots to include US and foreign silver and gold coins, early currency and copper large cents, trade dollars, etc. Notable pieces include 1885 and 1894 US $10 Liberty gold coins, 1912 Indian Head $10 gold, several large lots of silver Morgans and Peace dollars and much more too numerous to list.
Early collector American and British stamp albums contain various significant early stamps such as $90 Scott #39, Scott #17 Washington and others. It is strongly suggested that interested stamp and coin buyers allow ample time to preview these lots all in person. Flexible preview times are available.
Silver and jewelry buyers can choose from several sterling flatware sets, including Towle Rose Solitaire (62 pieces), Watson John Alden (83 pieces), Wallace Grand Baroque (282 pieces), Towle Rose Solitaire (55 pieces), Dominick & Haff Queen Ann (72 pieces), Tiffany Flemish (eight serving pieces), rare Tiffany Flemish Saratoga chip server, six-piece English Ellis Jacob Greenberg coffee and tea service and more.
