PLAINVILLE, CONN. — From a Manhattan estate and a Vermont home, items that will be featured in Winter Associates’ September 11 auction at 5:30 pm are prints by Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro, Richard Serra, Jim Dine and Claes Oldenburg, as well as contemporary paintings by Jose Pancetti and Max Gimblett. An assortment of American silver, including a gem-set Martele piece for Gorham and 39-piece Belle Epoque suite by Graff, Washbourne & Dunn, will be on offer along with an eclectic mix of American and Continental furnishings, glass and porcelain,
clocks, designer handbags, Asian collectibles, Oriental rugs, etc.
From the Manhattan estate comes a Picasso 1967 linocut “Grand Tete; Portrait de Jacqueline au cheveux lisses (Portrait of Jacqueline with Glossy Hair),” which is from a small edition of 50. Jacqueline was Picasso’s muse and model before becoming his second wife. In the 12 years before his death Picasso created more than 400 portraits of her, more than any other lover. With an estimate of $75/125,000 it is the strongest print in the sale. A Joan Miro etching and aquatint, also from the Manhattan estate, 1974 “Le Somnubule (The Sleepwalker)” incorporates motifs typical of the artist, including stars and spots encircling a mask-like image at center and is impressive in size, 45 by 29 inches.
Paintings of note, also from the Manhattan estate, include an oil on board beach scene by Brazilian artist Jose Pancetti, an immigrant and sailor in early life who became a superb colorist known for his simplicity; many of his best works are reduced to sand, light and sea. Two works by Max Gimblett, renowned for his Abstract Expressionist paintings that blend American and Japanese styles into organically shaped 3-D canvases with sophisticated color sense and glossy surfaces, are lacquered oval works, circa 2002, in black and gold, and will be featured in the sale.
From a Vermont home comes a collection of American silver. A special production for a Martele black coffee pot for Gorham has 19 inset cabochon stones of sapphire, citrine, amethyst, opal, tourmaline and garnets. Martele was Gorham’s high-end line, considered the firm’s crowning achievement and was created to compete with the finest European silversmiths (Martele means “to hammer” in French). Research with the help of John Hay Library at Brown University confirmed the black coffee pot was in the Gorham Archives 1899 Special Production book complete with photo. Each piece that Martele created was a one-of-a-kind, handmade original, and because of Martele’s short existence (1897-1912), it is estimated that only 1,500-1,700 pieces are still in existence.
From the same Vermont collection is a suite of Graff, Washbourne & Dunn sterling silver servingware in the Belle Epoque style. Totaling 39 pieces, included are candlesticks, champagne bucket, serving trays, service plates, bread plates, vases and gravy with liner. The unnamed pattern, patented in 1909, features an elaborate openwork design with garlands and floral bouquets.
Other items from the Vermont home include an Eldred Wheeler Dunlap chest on chest-on-frame, a bench-made reproduction based on circa 1790-1800 original made by the Dunlap family of New Hampshire with spoon-handle carving to skirt and salamander scrolls. A “Connecticut Lowboy,” also by Wheeler, is modeled after a 1760-80 Queen Anne dressing table. American antiques from the home include an Eighteenth Century blanket chest on frame and a tall chest, a Nineteenth Century New England tall clock and blanket chest, Nineteenth Century oil portraits, eagle weathervane, mechanical banks, treenware, pewter, baskets, early glass, etc.
A wide variety of items will cross the block, the Asian material includes a Canton famille jaune enamel on metal 10-inch-diameter dish with dragon design and 6-inch vase with European figures, both Qing dynasty, along with a Chinese export Hong Kong 19-inch-long silver tray with elaborate repousse dragon design; a finely woven antique Persian meditation carpet featuring lions, deer, birds and other animals on a floral scroll ground.
Other offerings are Continental furnishings, including Louis XV-style ormolu girandoles and a bronze dore wall clock by Benoit Richond, Napoléon III tantalus, a pair of Empire ormolu candlesticks, etc.; glass and porcelain, including Baccarat, Steuben, Cartier, Salviati, St Louis, Venetian, Lalique, Waterford, etc.; Maison Bagues rock crystal lamp and other lighting; Brazilian tapestries by Concessa Colaço and designer textiles, including a Chanel jacket and rain boots, Hermes crocodile handbag and nine silk scarves; Gucci lizard handbag; Louboutin handbag, designer belts, etc.; books including presidential topics and more.
